Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

I've only read the OP but I was around during the PS2 launch. It was pretty hard to find one. I had my money on launch day and couldn't actually get my hands on one until like March of the following year. The thing was constantly sold out and I remember Headline News saying something like "Sony says to be patient. They WILL make more PLaystation 2's).

And even then, the PS2 had "No games". Aside from my copy of Zone of Enders and The Bouncer, I suffered a gaming drought like you wouldn't believe. Only NBA Street and Red Faction (games in genres I didn't enjoy) held me over until the holiday flood of gaming goodness.

Hell, if I remember correctly, even memory cards were hard to find. What I'm saying is that, like the 3DS, a strong start doesn't reallly insure victory. There are a lot of variables and I suspect the PS2 will reclaim the lead very soon.

Lol it will NOT reach the ps2's massive numbers because this generation will not be as long as expected. It will probably be around 5-6 years before we see a new wave of next generation consoles (being generous) because they are already under powered in comparison to pcs. I am no elitist, (have x1) but what rich from reviewtechusa saying is true, consoles cant even get 1080p 60fps as the norm whilst pc are already doing 4k etc.

As games increase in technical demand, I actually expect the resolution to go down further and maybe few games ever reaching 60fps. Hell wasnt The Evil Within sub hd on x1? Its already happening and normally i wouldnt be worried about not having the best graphics etc, but what if devs have to cut down the amount of AI that is on the screen and limit the game worlds, etc to compensate for the hardware?

1. PS2's generation was also 5-6 years

2. Consoles back than were also underpowered

3. PS4 is more powerfull than the majority of gaming rigs at steam atm.

4. Even if they were underpowered compared to PC, the graphics standard are set by the consoles, not high end PCs

5. Evil Within is technically terribly optimazed game, across all platforms, it couldnt even hit 60fps on on most powerfull PC GPUs.

XBOX 360 NPD September (Halo 3 resales): 527K

XBOX 360 NPD October: 366K

PS4 NPD September (Destiny resales): 538K

So, i predict 375K for now. Oh, and DriveClub bundle will help even if not much.

It's definitely on track for being a great success, but I don't think it will outsell the PS2 as of now. However, seeing how the PS2's generation was only like 6 years long for that amount of success, the PS4 could outsell it if this generation lasts like 7-8 years without a rapid decline of momentum in sales. Trying to be an optimist
