Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 back to outsell PS2. Ooooh yeah baby!

Can PS4 outsell PS2 even next NPD?

Of course. PS4 is invincible!!! 166 44.39%

No. PS4 is a succes, but PS2 is PS2. 208 55.61%

Total:374

Yeah but PS2 had absolutely no games worth playing for over a year after it came out...until Twisted Metal Black came out in mid 2001. It sold on the sheer premise of being a DVD player and made up tech nonsense.

Sales for that console picked up in year 2+

Da King.

Doubt it keeps it up every year but glad to see something in gaming that isn't crapping itself atm.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

Not possible.

No, really.

PS2 ultimately became a mass success because it was also a DVD player and casual gaming was at dawn later in the PS2 lifecycle with DDR, Guitar Hero and Eyetoy.

So PS4 would need to become the de facto multimedia device of choice for homes and would need to rekindle a birth and casual gaming to take PS2's place.

Did I mention Japan? Japan.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

PS4 will sell some like 7-8 million in Japan, but will even sell 60 million in USA and 70 million in Europe for a 170 million Globally.

Don't think this gen will be as long. Don't see it happen. It's killing it though.

It probably won't have the longevity because PS2 sold 50m after PS3 launch. I just don't think PS5 will be bungled so badly and thus won't give the PS4 the legs it needs to surpass the monstrous PS2 number (sort of like how PS3's legs have been cut off so fast as opposed to PS2's long ones). It could be the fastest console or at least Sony console to hit 100m though!

PS3 has a long way to go down pricewise to be comparable to the PS2. It was down to $129 before the PS3 was even released. The PS3 is still retailing for $269.

Edit: This isn't to say that it will or won't happen. It's just easy to justify the reason the PS3 dropped so significantly in sales in comparison to the PS2 is because of the price being twice that of the PS2.

I agree but aren't PS3 components hard to get down in price?  I think that's why they haven't been lowering it (that and MS not lowering).  PS4 was designed to get down in price quickly and has common PC parts.  Unlike PS3 I can see it getting down to $99 eventually.  PS3 has another major price cut in it next year some time where it will go $150 for the 12gb, $200 for 250gb, and $250 for 500gb.  Possibly they will get everything $50 lower than that but will it matter at that point?

Lol it will NOT reach the ps2's massive numbers because this generation will not be as long as expected. It will probably be around 5-6 years before we see a new wave of next generation consoles (being generous) because they are already under powered in comparison to pcs. I am no elitist, (have x1) but what rich from reviewtechusa saying is true, consoles cant even get 1080p 60fps as the norm whilst pc are already doing 4k etc.

As games increase in technical demand, I actually expect the resolution to go down further and maybe few games ever reaching 60fps. Hell wasnt The Evil Within sub hd on x1? Its already happening and normally i wouldnt be worried about not having the best graphics etc, but what if devs have to cut down the amount of AI that is on the screen and limit the game worlds, etc to compensate for the hardware?

PS2 is comin the 2000, and PS3 2006...

PS4 or any console will ever be able to overtake the PS2.
