A Game is a spiritual successor when they have the same dev team, but different publisher. Something like Bayonetta to Devil May Cry, The Evil Within to Resident Evil, and BioShock to SystemShock.

Pretty sure Knack doesn't have the same dev team as Mario. Also it can be under the same publisher, but it has to have several key elements similar to the original game, like Dino Crisis to Resident Evil, or Perfect Dark to Goldeneye 007.
