Forums - Sony Discussion - Explain: Sony abandoning the Vita

Why support something consumers are not going to buy? Sony didn't abandon the Vita, they supported it, they marketed it and no one bought it. The customers spoke with their wallets.

The only people who say Sony abandoned the Vita are the owners themselves who want more support because they like the system and the others just jump on the bandwagon in the forums.

Sony is doing the smart thing with the Vita, not wasting tons of cash on it. Even if they did, consumers wouldn't buy it anyways. They tried, reception was weak, move on.

Wouldn't you think owners of the Vita are saying they want more support because they aren't getting any?

Just about everything releasing in the west is a port.  Sony is doing nothing to push exclussives for the console despite saying these exact quote.

"The issue that happened with PSP is we got overrun with ports.  "It became very difficult for us to define what made PSP unique. The content development became a bit unstructured or decentralized, in that we got a lot of content that was on PlayStation 2 and got thrown over to the handheld."

"The messaging is similar [between PSP and PS Vita/console games on a portable device], but I think the output is going to be quite different."

The message was different alright.  Not just a few ports here and there like the Vita.  Ports out the fucking ass.  Back then I believe it, but for a very long time I haven't and I've been pissed at Sony for the money that I've practically thrown away because of them.  Then when Sony has came out and said that indie games have been making a lot of money for them so they're going to push less AAA support and more for indies.  Less AAA when they've been doing pretty much none to begin with?  Plus 99.9999% of all indie games are appearing on PC priorr to their release on the Vita.  So in essence, they're saying.  "We're going to support not just ports, but shitty indie ports," since most indies are terrible.

This is the era of the smart phones.. The Vita doesn't stand a chance.. but Sony are trying to support it or raise a interest for it through the Ps4. The Vita have been getting more and more attractive since the Ps4 launched. But Handhelds isn't as great as they used to be.. Most people are only buying 3ds because of Pokemon.

Vita has no support, that's a fact not an opinion.

Wtf? I enjoy my Vita more than any other console at the moment. Do you even have one? Funny how people that don't own a Vita often complain the most.

First party support was not bad but 3rd party was awful

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Sony doesn't know how to treat a failure that can't be retreived.

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

gamescom 2012 was the last time that Sony announced big Vita titles in the form of Killzone: Mercenaries and Tearaway. Both were slated for a 2013 release, but the obvious expectation was of course that more big Vita titles were going to be announced at the various trade shows in 2013 (in other words, any gaming system is expected to see meaningful support beyond its second year on the market). That didn't happen, so that was the first nail in the coffin for "Sony supports the Vita".

The other telling sign is that Sony is clearly working on their exit strategy for the dedicated gaming handheld market (they will stream games to smartphones instead), hence why there is no point for them to make sure that Vita owners are happy. Whether they are or not, they aren't going to buy Sony's next handheld anyway, because there won't be one.

You can also look at your question from another perspective: What proof is there that Sony has not abandoned the Vita? That would be games that can push hardware sales, even if it's just a little bit (like Killzone and Tearaway did last year). What has there been and will be in 2014? Nothing.

Software support is only one part of the whole. Doesn't the Vita's remodelling and continual patches count as support? Not to mention Vita TV? Regardless of how it is predicted to perform, clearly its more than nothing.

It doesn't matter if Sony abandoned the Vita or not, the fact remains that its a product that is not a threat to any of their competitors.

Sony software support is piss poor. I don't even know what there next big title for the vita is

The development of the new model and the PSV-TV started long before they decided to jump ship, releasing them were probably decided on cheaper costs for the former, and salvaging some R&D for the latter.

They abandoned it after they realized it was a flop.
