Forums - Sales Discussion - Is the Wii U Really Doing Bad? My Viewpoint

Without getting to deep or indepth, I don't believe that the Wii U is really doing as poorly as people think it is.  I believe that it is actually returning to is normal sales.  Its hard to disconnect the Wii from the Wii U and think of it as a seperate system, but it is.  Was the performance of the Wii really normal?  Or was it an outliner.  Being at the right place at the right time launching alongside the terribily expensive PS3 while enjoying the gifts bestowed by mass market appeal?

I submit (for your consideration) that the Wii U should not be compared to the Wii as it was basically a freak of nature.  The sales success of the Wii  should be considered an outliner in Nintendo's console history, and that we should be comparing it to the Gamecube.  If we acccept that the Wii was an outliner, the current performance of the Wii U really doesn't look that bad.  In fact, I think it is likely to pass the Gamecube in lifetime sales.

Heck, even I want the Wii U to play Xenoblade!

There seems to be this disconnect between what made the Wii an insase success and what should be considered normal for the Nintendo brand.   It became a fad.  And thats okay because in the end a sale is a sale.   Nintendo has a group of fans which are probably more loyal than any other gaming brand.  They make great games that are always polished and enjoyable for what they are.   I believe that reaching the Gamecube's level of sales (or passing it) will show that Nintendo's core support is in place.

Do you consider the Wii U sales to be poor?  If so are you comparing it to the Wii and do you have a clear grasp on what made the Wii unusual?

Should be 30 m to show rise of fans.

If not the Wii, yo can compare it to other non-super selling monsters like Ps3 or xb360, etc... Heck, even when you compare it with N64 or Gamecube (One could say they are Nintendo normal standards not counting the Wii) it does not look very bright for it.

Now its selling better, but we have to wait a little bit more to know if it is a failure maketsharewise or not

I think the Wii U is performing poorly, but I'm not comparing it to the Wii. I'm comparing it to the Gamecube. First of all, the Wii U is behind the GC, both in the same timeframe from launch, and in weekly sales. Second of all, the Gamecube was sold at a profit from launch, the Wii U still isn't. So even when comparing it to a really low benchmark (GC) it's doing badly.

Then Wii U has to surpass GC numbers. If we ignore Wii then this is only logical explanation. But I highly doubt this will happen.

I thought nintendo announced every wii u sold since april 14 is now making money so maybe with mk8, smash and the 3ds sales they will finally be in profit. but then there is the n3ds to confuse things

When we ignore the Wii every Ninteno home console has sold less than its predecessor, WiiU is looking to continue that trend compared to the GCN sales. That is not successful, this is constant failure over the years in an industry that continues to grow.
I love Nintendo and their games but if they dont do something different, with the shrinking handheld market they will end up going the way of the dodo eventually.

You don't have to compare to the Wii to see that Wii U sales are poor. It got destroyed by the PS4 even with a head start. Add to that the fact that with all its' stumbles the Xbone is outselling it every week and looking to pass it as well.

Yes, Wii U is doing poorly - even compared with GC! And that's not good at all. With the success of the Wii I think it's quite fair to say that Nintendo should have gotten more fans than they had in the GC days, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

In order for me to say the Wii U sold at Normal for it's time, it has to beat Xbone in lifetime sales. It possible, but it's more of a longshot than reality, figuring even the XBox 360 still has legs and selling decently even to this day. I don't think the Wii U will have Xbones legs in the future....
