Hey guys, thought we could compile a list of things Sony have pioneered that have become staples in gaming and have been followed since. These are just some I could think of and they might not be totally accurate, looking for corrections and additions :P

First DVD enabled console(PS2)
First blu ray enabled console(PS3)
First controller to have 4 shoulder buttons
First controller to have twin analog sticks(twin flight sticks don't really count)
First controller to have clickable analog sticks(L3 and R3)
First controller to have analog pressure button(PS2/PS3. Xbox OG copied this, ultimately dropped with the 360/PS4).
First console to contain USB ports(PS2 onwards)
Eyetoy(PS2)
First console to output HD(PS2 with GT4)

What else?

when you need to add completely irrelevant stuff like movie support and USB ports to "innovations to gaming" and the other half of your list ist "added another one of already existing things" then the list is pretty  sad imo.

Cool.

Cool.

And why do you ignore the VR headset? I mean if you add a simple webcam (eyetoy was originally produced by Logitech) why do you ignore Project Morpheus. Sure its the same as oculus rift but as it seems Sony and Oculus are the pioneers when it comes to VR headset for gaming. And this will be the future one day  even if not right from the start.

Those things did not come to mind. Thanks for mentioning them. I'll add them.

B-But according to the Nintendo fanboys Sony copied everything from the almighty 'N'.

Inspiration goes both ways I guess. The "Wii" series that went to sell over 200 mill is a product of Nintendo copying the PlayStation Eyetoy tech and series of games. x}

But don't tell anyone.....

Kind of have to agree with you on this one, but I think we would be the minority lol

Adding double what the competition had, adding a few things pcs have, and using your consoles to push whatever media format they were currently invested in were hardly ground shattering innovations. I Definately like the clickable analoge sticks, the eye toy and pressure sensitive buttons though.

Which is my point. Nintendo didn't create EVERYTHING.

Wait a second now, wasn't Dreamcast first with being able to output HD, also first with broadband capability and wasn't Nintendo first with VR in Virtual boy?

'
Made by AGE and was an officially licenced Nintendo product.

And FYI the Wii was successful because of the price and because of the motion sensors NOT because there was a camera built in.

Also Gameboy Color played Gameboy games. Sega also had something like that but I believe it was just with some extra hardware addons. Being backwards compatible does not qualify then. And when you count Computers then BC is a very very old feature.

PS1 being able to play CDs?
The Eye Toy?
Backwards compatibility?

Backwards compatibility for sure unless the old Atari's had that feature? Was the 3DO not the first console to play CDs?

I believe the 7200 could play 5200 games, the genesis also could play Master system games via the power base converter. Backwards compatibility has been around for a long time, well before Sony entered the game

Sony was not the first CD based console, the 3DO, Sega CD, Turbografx-16, Neo Geo CD, Philips CDI, and Atari Jaguar spring to mind and I'm sure there were other more obscure consoles that did to.
