Come on people, a basic understand of math's should tell you that OP fudged the numbers, DMC has a higher average than GOW2 and 3

Edit: Nevermind, you're talking about the first DMC, not the reboot. But the GoW games have more reviews though, so the ranking is correct.

Fair but "Average is based on the aggregate using the most reviews" makes no sense average and aggregate both mean to work out the average of a number.

This isn't merging two complete lists, it's cuting bits from one and bits from the other.

It seems more games need to be included, but damn I just can't be bothered right now... It's just a pain deciding what qualifies as a hack 'n' slash since so many games cross genres. :/

Eventually I'll update it with some suggested games, but at least you know the top 10 is legit and it's only a few games missing.

My favorites
1. Onimusha series
2. God of War series
3. Ninja Gaiden series
4. Devil May Cry series
5. Dynasty Warriors series
Also I'm pretty sure that Bayonetta 2's final score will be good enough to knock one of those games out of the top 20.

I want an Onimusha HD colletion or a proper reboot SO freaking badly! Such an amazing series!

Kinda sad that they successively sold less.  That being said Dawn of Dreams must be undertracked by a lot on this site there is no way it sold less then one million copies.

Updated~

* Included some missing games.
* Fixed errors.
* Increased the list size to top 25, up from 20.
* Bayonetta 2 has entered and is currently at #7. It is the first game in the genre to pass 90% since God of War III released 4 1/2 years ago.

God Of War is easily my favourite hack n slash series. Really excited for God Of War IV, it will definitely come, but I hope its announced soon. Maybe at VGA, PlayStation event at Vegas or one of the rumoured exclusives to be announced in December.

PS4 is really missing in this genre. I would even take GoW Ascension remaster, actually loved that game.
Eagerly awaiting hopefully GoW 4 made by Cory Barlog director of my favourite GoW game.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Devil May Cry and Bayonetta aren't the same genre as God of War.

God of War is a hack in slash action adventure with a 1 combo of doom style of gameplay.

DMC and Bayonetta are stylish character action games. There a huge difference.

What do you mean by 1 combo? GOW has many combos, some of which require specific button sequences and others can be formed by your own skills. Also, each God Of War game has a secondary weapon which is also very fun to use, though not as useful as the blades.

I would also really like a God Of War: Ascension remaster, and would buy it day one. But it would be even more awesome if they made a God Of War: Kratos Collection, with all 6 God Of War games in 1080p60fps and having the arena combat modes available for multiplayer.

There are plenty of combos, it's just that most of them are pretty useless and there's little to discourage Square Square Triangle spamming your way through the entire game. There's very little incentive to master the combat system, whereas DMC and Bayonetta are designed specifically for the purpose of mastering combat mechanics and looking good while doing it.

DMC and Bayonetta have different focuses and aren't really hack and slash unless you're just bad, but that's like saying a puzzle game is really a patience test because you can't figure it out and have to brute force your way through.
