I've played all of them except God of War Ascension, the Darksiders games and Castlevania LoS. Never really considered myself a big fan of the genre but looking at my history, I guess I am. Can't argue with the results, though. From a "total package" standpoint, you just can't beat God of War. If Bayonetta had a better story and sharper graphics, I bet it would have topped the charts, though. To me, it always had the best gameplay of the genre, easily.

Bayonetta doesn't have as awesome gameplay as GOW series. Also, GOW just simply doesn't have better story and graphics. It is also a lot more epic (I'd say the most epic gaming series ever) and has an amazing sense of scale and boss fights. It is also a lot more atmospheric. Those are the reasons it has scored better.

Also, GOW: A is a must-play if you like other GOW games.

I don't know.  I never really liked the way God of War games felt in combat.  The scale was epic and the story was great but I just found myself putting up with the game to get to the next setpiece.  Honestly, I bought the first one just for the boobies and didn't like it.  The only reason I bought the second was because I found the HD collection in a pawn shop for like $10.  It was an all around great game but, for me, the combat was still the weakest part.  The third was simply fantastic and the sense of being powerful was really there.  But these are all just my opinion.  Bayonetta doesn't take itself seriously at all but as far as scale, there are some bosses that could crush GoW's biggest bosses in the palm of their hands.

I may buy GoW:A one day.  I know it was like insanely cheap on PS+ earlier this year but I just didn't want to play it.  I heard bad things about it and, to me, the story was pretty much over at the end of GoW3.

I can't call you wrong, as personal tastes differ, but I simply disagree with the combat and scale. GOW is the best hack and slash franchise (and the one of the best in all of gaming) primarily due to its incredible combat and epic scale. I don't remember any boss in Bayonetta being capable of crushing Poseidon, Chronos or Alecto.

Since you obviously dislike the GOW series, I can't recommend GOW: A to you, but it has improved combat mechanics and is definitely good. Also you seem to not know about the existence of the PSP games. In terms of story Ghost Of Sparta (also available on PS3 as part of Origins Collection) is the best and its a very well made game, better than the original. It also has the best secondary weapon in the series. You should definitely play it, as its the best game in the series in many respects despite originally being a PSP exclusive.

How can you forget ninja gaiden black? http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox/ninja-gaiden-black

Got the PSP games too (see pic).  DIdn't like the first but loved Ghost of Sparta.  I honestly don't hate the series.  For me, it's the production values and the story that impress me.  It's not a bad playing game at all.  Like I said, it deserves to be number one on the list.  I may get Ascension one day.  People said it had the best graphics of the gen and I'd like to see that.

Just based on my enjoyment, it would probably look something like this:

  • 1. Bayonetta
  • 2. Devil May Cry
  • 3. God of War
  • 4. Ninja Gaiden (because the games are too fucking HARD! I beat them all though.  First two on Vita and the last on Wii U)
  • 5. everything else.
edit:  http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=6738543 that was my impression of the Bayonetta 2 demo.  What can I say?  I like the series.  Maybe because it's a hack and slash game with a female lead that doesn't suck.  I don't overlook the flaws, though.  Right or wrong, I calls 'em like I sees 'em.  Even back when the first launched, my opinion of it was that it played incredibly well and was average or below in every other regard.

I'll be honest, hack n' slash has never been a genre I particulary enjoy considering how bad I am at making combos and enjoying the flow of the combat in general. But I did like Castlevania LoS or Bayonetta. (Metal Gear Rising too)

Now I think you REALLY need to play GOW: A. The story isn't very good, but the combat has definitely improved. I can also confirm that it indeed is the best looking game on 7th-gen consoles. Also the multiplayer is really good, though finding players at this stage after its release would be hard. You should definitely buy it, I think its available for just $20 at Amazon.

On another note, the final boss battle in GOW: A (wouldn't spoil it for you) is easily one of the high points of the series.

Anyways my list looks a bit different:

1. GOW (You'd have guessed it by now)

2. Devil May Cry

3. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (would've been a bit higher if it had more than 2 hours of gameplay lol)

4. Bayonetta

5. Everything else

God of War really is the best hack n slash games you will ever come across. You cant really argue with that.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Hey OP! Looking at the scores you provided, DMC (93.62) is actually higher than GoW (93.52)!

*edit* Unless you're using the Game Rankings score....in which case. My bad.

I understand that you're a GoW fan and all, but Devil May Cry should be number 1 judging by those scores.
