Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do you like Destiny or are you just conditioned to?

http://thegamefanatics.com/2014/10/07/fanatical-rant-brainwashing-destiny-became-popular

You often hear that even the people who play Destiny for hours on end every day will complain about how bad it is. People still play it and keep buying it though. They recommend it to friends talking about how it's bad but it'll get fixed, and it's getting patches. There's even a large portion of the game's audience that will fight you if you claim the game is just a complete disappointment, despite them not liking other games of the genre or better games in said genre.

My personal theory was that the audience had been conditioned to like it, and with the recent comments from Dave Anthony on using Marketing to brainwash people into liking games before release, and my experiences with college level marketing classes, I think it's the most solid theory one can come up with.

So do you really like Destiny or have you been trained to like it?

There are those who play it who say they don't like it. Maybe your theory is correct. Personally, I think the looting and upgrading your gear can be addictive. Marketing is also a big part of it though.

I don't think I have an addictive personality but I do enjoy the game for the gameplay. Sure the story is weak and the PvP could be better but I have had a good time in my 20 or so hours. I can only speak for myself though. I look forward to the I provements they make over time.

I like destiny especially with friends. Nothing better than finding the perfect way to beat a nightfall strike and weekly strike. Then do the raid and take your awesome new gear to the crucible. The game is incredibly addicting.

I legitimately like Destiny. The marketing had nothing to do with it. Its just sad that gamers on the internet ride the hate train even if they never played it themselves.

It's possible. I think we see it with a lot of "I only like Nintendo games" people, too.

I played WoW long after I'd stopped having much fun with it, simply because I had goals in my head and because I didn't want to simply discard all my hard work. Those are tactics developers use to keep people coming back.

Destiny is an Okay game. IMO it's getting so much attention because it's introducing Millions of casual gamers to an MMO for the first time ever. It had lots of problems MMOs had when they first started coming out (no trade options, repeated raid boss patterns, no story, repeated mob waves etc).

Funny thing is all people that I know that love it never played MMOs before or are not hardcore gamers. They think its the best thing ever and the first game of it's kind, while hardcore gamers know other games have done what Destiny is doing, only better.

Gameplay was Halo-ish which is great, but I literally went from Boss 1 to final boss without no explanation on how I got there. That and I have to keep paying $20 every time for added content added to a $65 dollar game was the final straw. I finished the game in a week and traded it for store credit. There conditioning wasn't strong enough to get me... .

It's a loot game, so there is an addictive type element that will keep some people playing even if they don't think it's a great game. Also, there's not much else to play at the moment.

it is impossible to like a game without being conditioned

and the reason i say that is how do you generally end up liking a game?

by seeing gameplay? by playing it? by hearing its soundtrack?

that is all conditioning

therefore i don't think your question is appropriate

i think what you probably mean't to ask is if people sincerely enjoy playing destiny

I really like the game, and enjoyed doing various tasks, challenges and bounties.
My goal was to equip a legendary item in every slot, which I reached last night, and even overshot by obtaining two exotic weapons and an exotic helmet.
The coolest thing was yesterday when I went to do my usual Fallen Walker public event, climbed onto the roof to my usual camping spot, opened a loot chest, and instead of the usual glimmer and spinmetal received both a decoherent and a legendary engram.
Went to the cryptarch, who decripted that legendary into an exotic fusion rifle.
The single most satisfying event in my 30 days of playing.

Now that I've reached my goals, and since my PS+ expired, it is time to bid farewell to Destiny, play FIFA for a few days, while I wait for The Evil Within to arrive.

I had a lot of fun, really enjoyed the game, but I will not be buying the DLC (my next-gen resolution), time to move on to new games, I don't have enough free time to keep playing Destiny.

So far, my GOTY.

This, I put 40 hours into Destiny because getting some decent loot became a goal. That doesn't mean I necessarily enjoyed most of the time I spent with it.

That was my most anticipated game of the year, but now I'm having more fun chipping away at my backlog.
