Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Android L make the difference?

We are expecting Android's next big OS to release within the next month.  What will that mean to the industry as a whole?

Well, at the moment, Android running Smartphones/Tablets take up the lions share over everything else including iOS, but as we all know, Android is very fragmented over numerous versions and updates, see below for the latest stats:

  • Gingerbread (Rel. Dec'10-Sep'11) - 3.41%
  • Ice Cream Sandwich (Rel. Oct'11-Mar'12) - 6.84%
  • Jelly Bean (Rel. July'12-Oct'13) - 48.07%
  • Kit Kat (Rel. Oct'13- ) - 40.68%

As you can see, although in the last year we have seen fragmentation evening out somewhat, we now have virtually 90% of Android users running either Jelly Bean or Kit Kat.  Android L is expected to be compatible with devices typically within a 18 month release of the software, but it is expected to include devices up to 2 years.

This is where we may see a difference in strategy with Android and it's smartphone/tablet partners, allowing for quick delivery of the Android L update, some are mentioning within 3 months of release.  So by next summer, we may begin to a huge push towards Android L and may in fact see a huge uptake.  At last we may in fact get to see if there is in fact a large majority of "powerful" Android-based devices or whether the Android market is lead by cheap/less powerful devices that have inflated the Android marketshare.

In either case, Android has some way to get close to iOS adoption ratio.  Comparitavely speaking iOS 7 which was released at roughly the same time as Kit Kat (it was released 1 month prior) has an adoption percentage of 78.89%.

PLEASE NOTE: These stats were based over reports from 1st Aug - 6th Oct 2014

Around the Network

I have used a beta edition of Android L and don't fell that will be a massive change.
Infact i only liked the battery comsuption that is better (Windows Phone is still better) and thats all.
The rest to me was all cosmectic changes.

As a developer myself I really hope they bring compatibility level to those of Windows.

Hopefully ART will make things buttery smooth when that comes out! I do hate the adoption rates which is a thing that google needs to enforce if they ever want a legit, unified platform
