Forums - Sports Discussion - Why doesn't Europe have a continental fùtbol league?

And it can be called Champions League.

Amazing ideia.

Amarica can have one too... maybe they call it Libertadores.

This idea gets floated around time to time, but I could never see all these countries agreeing on a "Super League" of the top 20 clubs in Europe. Who would those 20 clubs be? How many representatives from each nation would there be? For example do you leave out Manchester United or Manchester City? AC Milan or Inter Milan?

Promotion and relegation are too ingrained in the culture of Europe. This would be like introducing it to baseball in the US and seeing AAA and MLB clubs swap places.

Both have their + and - and I think it's great to see opposing models at play. My biggest issue with Europe's model is in the past twenty years we've seen real stagnation as handful of clubs dominate respective leagues. On the flip side my issue with US sports is seeing clubs move to other cities or cities being held hostage on stadium deals.

Besides money is no issues with the Champions League being the biggest club sports event on the planet by miles.

We have a Champions League.  It is called the CONCACAF Champions League.  The group stages are wrapping up, my club DC United actually qualified for this year's and has already advanced to the knoc out stage.

There have been discussions of the Libertadores becoming the big tournament in the future and the Sudamericana and CCL being like Europa League's for each continent.  I would say we're a good twenty years off that though.

I think only US and Canada are not part of Libertadores. Everybodry else in America is... from Mexico to Chile.

Makes sense (even if it is not called Libertadores... well I like more Libertadores than CONCACAF Champions League).

I think only Mexico makes the Libertadores of any NA nation.  I doubt Honduras, Gautemala, Belize, etc. are in it as they struggle in our own CL.  DC United was invited to the Sudamericana years ago, but think we're a bit off to have depth and handle that amount of travel (be like us going to Europe) in a competition.

American sports don't have this problem because the leagues become de facto monopolies. Smaller clubs would lack exposure and die off. And any player worth a damn would be in the hypothetical continental league.

That's.... not a good thing.

Here in Europe it is theoretically possible for anyone to start up a club at a very small level and eventually build up to become one of the best teams around. That's brilliant. American sports do have a problem in that some areas don't have teams near them. That would never be a problem in Europe, a team could just be created and if the area is big enough they will easily be able to get revenue meaning they can grow and move up the leagues and become a big team.

MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon as one of the best examples of this.

Why? We have the Champions League for that. It would also immediately screw up every other competition. Also, how would promotion/relegation work?

Regulation would be done away with to keep all clubs on an equal playing field.

too socialist for me, I want regulations/promotions

Champions League and Europa League work just fine.

Yep. Also FC United as well

Yep, saw them win promotion live to the 7th tier of English Football years back.  Play in a small stadium in Bury, but have plans to build something for long term.
