According to general timelines and what I remember, Getaway had a cover based mechanic in 2002, I guess, Metal Gear Solid 2 did as well. This aid while you are right, Gears had a help in it's popularity, a lot of games were in development when Gears came out, Uncharted, Mass Effect, so it wasn't like it wouldn't have happened without Gears.

EDIT: qucik check of the wiki pages lists a game called Winback as the first TPS one but Kill.Switch (2003/4) was the closest to modern TPS Cover based shooting system.

Hmm, pie.

Nobody supervised those games. They were made entirely be Ready At Dawn Studio. They are Daxter (2006) and God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (2008).

Everyone was cynical about them being able to deliver as they were new and unproven and PSP was considered "incapable" of handling these games (especially God Of War) on the same scale as the PS2 without severe compromises. But they did with flying colours.

Not everyone was cynical. Ready at Dawn is made up of ex-Sony employees.

Daxter had ND supervision and God of War was made in conjunction with Sony SM.

As long as the soul is in the story and characters I don't mind ordinary gameplay. I actually find myself less interested in playing hours and hours of well regarded gameplay with weak characters and weak story holding things together. Diablo III is a case in point, it got high review scores yet I mostly find myself yawning my way through it, the only thing really keeping me going is playing co-op with my son. The story is meh, the characters are 2 dimensional at best and I just find myself not terribly engaged.

Tomb Raider was the same. In a lot of ways it's a better game than Uncharted, but I like Uncharted a lot more because the characters are engaging, the character relationships have depth and the stories are good.

My worry is that The Order may end up doing badly in the character, relationship, story department.

I also worry about Bloodborne for the reason that my preferences seem to be moving away from the minimalist story, empty vessel character style. I loved Demon's Souls a lot, one of my favourite games of the generation, so I wonder why I never bought the Dark Souls games.

Perhaps if I want pure gameplay goodness I gravitate towards games that are over in under an hour, like Smite. that's 100% gameplay and loads of fun. But it's over usually in less than half an hour. On console I'm looking for a different experience. If I'm going to put 12-15 hours into a game it's got to be more than just gameplay, that doesn't do it for me any more. And for the 60+ hour RPGs it really has to be something much more than gameplay.

Gears invented the cover based 3rd person shooter. You had plenty of third person shooters before it came out. For example, Resident evil 4.

I don't think Gears of War was even the first cover based 3rd person shooter. But it definitely made the mechanic popular though.

I don't think any game got cover down like Gears to this date.

I played Spec Ops: The Line a month ago. While it was fun, the cover mechanic was horrid and I could understand why not multiplayer.

Gears game mechanics excell on gun control and the transition from cover to moving in action.

Agreed, the foundation was made but Gears definitely perfected it and made the cover system very smooth.

Yup, you are right. Checked it myself as well just now.

How can other studios not mimic it right?

I'm no dev but is it really hard to get the mechanics to a competitive level?

It seems like it.

First cover based shooter was kill.switch. That game designer was later hired for gears of war 1. And cover based shooter isn't synonymous for gears of war.

Ryse flopped and MS allowed it to be released on Steam, I wonder if Sony would do the same if this game lives up to its feedback.

The order will not flop. Nothing released on the PS4 currently will flop. Not until the market gets a bit more saturated with software. Actually, given the increased installed base, it will probably outsell infamous.

Exactly. The PS4 will have an install base of 18/19 million by the time it releases and chances are it will get good advertising with decent reviews, 80+ metacritic. I can see it selling over 2 million year 1. Is that enough to make it a financial success? I'd imagine so...

These idiotic "journalists" keep previewing the game using the same demo that has been out for a long time and is likely not a good representation of the game anymore. We know it was disappointing and the game needed improvements back then. It's been months now, let it go.

They certainly love an easy target. Beating a dead horse into further oblivion.

The thread title sounded very click baiting and fanboyish but I find it hard to disagree with its points given the footage we have of the game
