Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokemon: Why is there only 1 save file?

It wouldn't make such a good of a joke if it had more safe files ^^

It annoys me enough I have to go into appdata to swap save files for Burnout Paradise... I don't see any reason a game can't provide you with at least 3 save files.

Here's an idea. Suppose you have three save files.

Save to file 1 just before fighting Mewtwo. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 2. Load file 1. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 3. Trade Mewtwo to file 2. Load file 1. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 3. Trade Mewtwo to file 2. Load file 1...

Infinite Mewtwo exploit.

I wouldn't worry too much about such exploits. There have been in-game exploits and cheating devices that make acquiring anything and everything a snap since Gen 1. Doesn't do you much good outside of free battles in competitive play, though. Just about every game mode with rules bans Mewtwo and his ilk. And even more important than that, every game mode except free battle keeps you from using more than one Pokemon with the same Pokedex #.

What's the memory requirement of a full pokemon storage box? That's 1500 entries of data.

Probably not small. But this is ultimately about tradition and money, the game was built on the idea of trading and everyone having a copy+system.

It definitely sucks; I've wanted additional save slots since I was little. I restart Pokemon games all of the time and It'd be nice to not have to do that.

Hacked Pokemon have a scrabbled ID# associated with their trainer and get detected that way, they get banned irregardless of whether they have fake stats or were just faked into the game (like a Lvl.1 encounter of Dratini outside Palette Town). You can circumvent that (but will lose hacked stats/IVs) by breeding the pokemon as the offspring will be genuine.

I don't think anyone means being able to save one game in multiple different files, more being able to create more then one profiles like Zelda.

*shrug* you could still do minor exploits. Infinite starters. Infinite event Pokemon.

You can sort of do this kind of thing already thanks to Pokemon Bank, but that's a brand new service and it isn't available to everyone.

Infinite starters is a complete non-issue and totally legal.

  1. Go to the GTS and look for the starter you want. Trade for it.
  2. Go breed it.
  3. Repeat the first two steps.

Unless you want a perfect specimen, they are incredibly easy to acquire in the GTS because there are thousands available from everyone else making thousands of eggs in order to get to that one perfect specimen. I've sent at least 20 Squirtles and Fennekins each through Wonder Trade myself from breeding in order to get the one I want for my team, and I'm not nearly as meticulous as most competitive players. I've gotten several Charmanders, a couple of Bulbasaurs, a Chespin, a Froakie, a Totodile and whatever that grass starter's name is from Gen 5 from Wonder Trade as well.

It's impossible to exploit event Pokemon through new save files. I found this out the hard way, because I bought my 3DS and cart of Pokemon Y used from my nephew. He already downloaded the Pokebank and received the free Celebi. I wiped out all of his data from both the 3DS and Y, including his NNID and save file. When I downloaded the Pokebank and tried to get my free Celebi, it said that I couldn't get it again, even though I got Club Nintendo points for it. So the servers either keep track of an invisible number on the 3DS or the cart (I'm guess the latter), and when it sees that you received an event Poke already, it denies you a second time, even with a new file.

EDIT: I see your point though. If I had to share the game with a sibling, I'd be pissed I couldn't have my own file. And knowing Nintendo, only one event Pokemon would be allowed on a cart/system even with multiple saves, so your brother or sister would have to miss out. But like I said, owning multiple legendaries or event Pokes won't get you very far outside of battles with absolutely no rules.

Yeah its kind of annoying and Pokebank may allow you to save Pokemon but deletes the items as well as previously mentioned.

I rather have a hard difficulty setting like Black 2 did but at the START of the game. I thought restarting the game after getting the key would let me play the game in Hard mode. NOPE. Deleting the game also deleted that option >_>

Money money money!

Edit: And is that such a bad thing? They make the game for money to begin with.

I refuse to believe that money itself is enough to inspire people to make great pieces of entertainment.

Well, the first PKMN, RGB, were that way because they had to be in order to let you name all of the pokemon. After the gameboy days... there is no excuse Nintendo. You just want more money.
