I am curious as well! Is it really only cause they want people to buy more than one copy or is there some other reason like limited space on the cartridge or something?

That's probably a good reason for why it started like that, but surely that's not still an issue? Especially with the downloadable versions of the current games or especially the home console games.

Well... Downloadable versions still has to comply with the rules of the cartrige versions or else the downloadable versions will have an advantage over the cartrige version. (And a really big one at that imo)

Idk whats with the console versions though. Maybe the save files are too big and there is a restriction on the size that each save file can have per game on the console and saving all the pokemon u catch and etc adds up or something. Again, I am just presuming its the case, idk for sure

Something that really bugs me about Pokemon is that we only have one chance to play it to it's fullest, unless your willing to lose all your progress. In almost any other game you have multiple save files, or at least 3. And it isn't about the genre, so why is it? I doubt it's hardware/software limitations, since the series has been going for almost 20 years now. If you say it's because it's on a handheld, then what about the console iterations?

I say it's for the money. They want us to either buy the 2 or 3 versions of Gen X. And if we get multiple save files, there's no reason to get the other version/3rd version/sequel of the game (except if you want to catch' em all. But now we have an improved GTS for that)

You got it. They know that people (families) will be forced to buy multiple copies. My house had at least 2 copies of the older Pokemon games. It worked.

Money money money!

Edit: And is that such a bad thing? They make the game for money to begin with.

GREED!

I feel bad because I had to delete my brotheres file so I could start one. Its crazy that they expect siblings to each own their own copy of the game! :(

You answered it yourself, it's to buy both versions of the game, and if you like the game so much you'd buy 2 of the same version just to keep your saved file.

Trust me I used to go to Nintendo World lots and there were some kids who has like 2 Blacks and 1 White. It wasn't common, but it wasn't rare either. Big reason why Pokémon games sell over 5+ mill.

So if we like a game we should buy a second copy? That's a terrible way to respond to this sort of thing. I'm a huge fan of Pokemon but having only one save slot really bugs me, especially since I like to replay the game on nuzlocke runs. Always hurts to delete my team and start anew. Nintendo is pretty much the only publisher that gets away with these archaic business practices.

You are absolutely right... I agree 100% with you. This is my ultimate pet peeve with Pokémon games as well. And I feel something should definitely be done about it.

But, me being a player since the Red/Blue days, I've sadly gotten used to it. Kids have gotten used to it as well. It seems Nintendo has benefitted financially from adult pokémon players ability to compromise and not expect anything more since they were trainned to only have one saved file since the beginning. Kids that usually play it don't even question why they have only one saved file, they are just thrilled they have rare pokémon or that they are playing pokémon all together. Plus Pokémon is many a first kids video game, so this would be the norm for them as well. Some kids just don't know better.

Only way Nintendo is going to get there act together is if no one buys AS/OR next. If you won't buy it I give you props man because I am more of a sucker!

Here's an idea. Suppose you have three save files.

Save to file 1 just before fighting Mewtwo. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 2. Load file 1. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 3. Trade Mewtwo to file 2. Load file 1. Catch Mewtwo. Save to file 3. Trade Mewtwo to file 2. Load file 1...

Infinite Mewtwo exploit.

Well, at least the Pokebank means you no longer have to lose that Latias you busted your ass to acquire, or have to rebreed all of your 5IV thoroughbreds. But you can't send Pokes to the bank with items, so that means even items like Mega Stones would get lost in a new game. But it is still unforgivably appalling that there is still only one save file per cart. I want to start a new game with a new team, but won't do so because I don't want to lose some of the Megastones I can only get in events.

Because Nintendo puts tradition and "doing things their own way" over customer satisfaction--and fans let them get away with it. Also, yeah, they want to force people into buying multiple copies and consoles.

Things like this suck. It's as bad as some of the practices by other companies that draw a lot more anger. There is no excuse for it.

I think that's an unfair generalization. In some cases "doing things their own way" leads Nintendo to more consumer friendly actions than competing hardware and software companies.

That being said, only one save file per cart for Pokemon is inexcusable.

I don't think anyone means being able to save one game in multiple different files, more being able to create more then one profiles like Zelda.

*shrug* you could still do minor exploits. Infinite starters. Infinite event Pokemon.

You can sort of do this kind of thing already thanks to Pokemon Bank, but that's a brand new service and it isn't available to everyone.
