Forums - PC Discussion - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Requires 6 GB VRAM for Ultra Quality Textures

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor apparently is the one game to rule them all, if them refers to video RAM, at least.

Monolith's game is one of the most anticipated titles of the moment, an action role-playing game that blends gameplay similar to that of the Assassin's Creed series with the sprawling and fascinating fantasy world of J. R. R. Tolkien.

From what the developer has shown so far, the game looks great on consoles, especially on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, putting the considerable computing power of the two systems to good use, but the latest development involves the PC port of the title.

An image has popped up on NeoGaf, showing that Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor requires an unprecedented 6 GB of VRAM in order to use Ultra quality textures at a resolution of 1920x1080.

Granted, for the time being, we have no data other than this screenshot, but most likely we'll hear from the team at Digital Foundry pretty soon.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor follows the story of a ranger who is killed along with his family when Sauron's army exits from the Black Gate, and who, empowered by an ancient spirit with a grudge of its own, comes back from the dead and heads into Mordor to inflict his vengeance upon the orcs and the Dark Lord.

The game is coming out on September 30 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and on November 18 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I saw this on GAF a day ago. Im glad I'm getting a 4GB card soon, I wonder what those textures will look like in game.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

I am running a 7970 GHZ Edition 3GB. Wont be able to run it at Ultra but cant wait to see some videos of what it looks like.

Hmmm, I starting to worry about getting my 670 to carry on for another year. It only has 2GB of VRAM (according to the version I can see on Amazon)

I think I can probably hold off for another year to get the 1070, though that's probably still not enough for 4k.

It does give you a reminder of the value that consoles offer. My graphics card alone set me back as much as the PS4 when I bought it

i think it depends on the model of 670 you got, there are ones with 1gb and ones with 2gb. my 660 comes with 2gb if i remember correctly.

and yeah, the value of consoles is really under estimated sometimes.

As Sony and Microsoft optimise their OSes more RAM could be freed up for game use. I was shocked to see that Metro 2033 Redux was only using 350mb of system Ram at one point. On a console all that excess RAM could be dedicated to graphics. 4GB+

But the 670 is a lot more powerful than the PS4 vga. I still think you can get better graphics with your card.

It's highly unlikely that PS4 will run this game on 1080p with Ultra settings.

The efficiency as others have pointed out outweighs the power differences. Ultra will be only slightly just above the PS4 because that's the cheapest thing to do. There's little incentive to really push the boundaries on PC because nobody can make money developing for just PC if they're pushing for super high end graphics

Star Citizen is the exception... Hence my huge investment in the game

That's what I think, and the reason that your  670 will probably be enough for the entire generation. They can't push the graphics too far because of consoles. Besides in a blind test almost no one can tell the difference between 'ultra' resolutions of texture against 'medium' ones in 1080p.

Yesterday I was playing Crysis and I was like: 'OMG it's 7 years old graphics! how could they do it?' because those graphics still kicking today. It's almost unbelievable how real those forests look. Some of the newer games can't match it.

By the way, I was playing Crysis with my old HD 5770 on 720p 60fps locked - some say that Shadow of Mordor will run about 720p on XOne! - and I'm waiting for my R9 280 to arrive. I really think (and hope) this card will be enough for this generation.

The problem as others have pointed out is VRAM. With the PS4's 8GB of memory, it has a huge amount of VRAM since it's DDR5 and just the way the system is coded.

I have a reasonable 8GB of RAM (maybe dodgy RAM), but only 2GB of VRAM, which means I can't run these high end textures.

That's the main problem. The other is I like the idea of 4k...
