Forums - Gaming Discussion - A really bad case of eye strain/computer vision syndrome

Hey guys

During the summer of 2008 I developed a cause of eye strain caused by constantly surfing the internet and gaming. This lasted the entire summer. I got headaches after about 1-2 hours of surfing the internet. The issue resolved itself when I started college and had to go to class every day.

In early 2009 I dropped out of college. I did some jobs here and there but I knew I would go to college again in september so I never really searched for a full time job. A month later the computer vision syndrome returned. After a few month I got a headache after spending less than 30 minutes on my computer! Somewhere during these dreadfull fays, I discovered that I did not have any issues using my pc when it was dark outside. This was amazing, and I kept up late every day so I could still game and surf on the internet.
I went to an eye doctor but she did not notice anything bad about my eyes but described me some eye drops and magnifying (+ 0.5) glasses. Neither seemed to really help. Also, watching TV did not pose any problems, neither did reading a book.

Anayway, when I went to college again in late 2009 my eye issues resolved itself. I remember spending lots of time on LOTRO in the summer of 2011 without any issues.

Fast forward to last year, 2013. I had an internship in may and june. Due to lots of time spent on the PC on my internship and playing Total War, my eye problems returned. I had some hard weeks in june, but eventually the problems disappeared because I drastically reduced my time spent on the computers.
Suddenly, in the beginning of august I got a headache after surfing on the internet with my Iphone. Since then, I still suffer from eye strain...

Again, I did not have any problems once it got dark outside. But some things were different: Watching TV also strained my eyes just like using my Iphone did.
Somewhere in november I consulted an eye doctor and she concluded I have a slight case of astigmatism. She prescribed me glasses to resolve this. And I have to say, they do help!

Everything is much sharper using these glasses. BUT, the problem has not been solved. I still get headaches from watching any screen, but when I wear my glasses the pain is not as bad.

I'm in my last year of university so I really am desperate. I'm studying management and will have to spend lots of time behind a PC in one year when I graduate. I'm really interested in management and business but I'm terrified by spending entire days with a terrible headache...

Does anyone recognise this? Can someone help me?

wtf

She might have prescribed them to you. But I see a lot of gamers where specific gaming glasses for computer screens.

" She prescribed me glasses to resolve this. And I have to say, they do help!"

Maybe you need better glasses or simply different ones.

I dont feel headache when I stress my eyes, but I feel them in the next day if I oversleep to compensate the tiresome I feel after a stressful day for my eyes. Worse is when I get spots on my peripheral vision due to excessive Web surfing or game session that are too long. These spots are like the ones you get when you look directly at a strong light source like the sun or light bulbs. And only disapear if I stay awake in a dark room for one hour. A doctor said to me in a consultation that is due to my brain starts to get tired of so much "image processing".
Never notice nothing about night and day cycles to help the situation. I usually work at a computer at day and game at night.

Hope you can get better.

Check out gaming glasses like Gunnar Optiks...it cuts out the light that screens emit that tends to give headaches and mess with your sleep cycles and whatnot

That's possible. I'm probably revisting the doctor (or antoher one) and explain that my problems haven't been resolved after one year.

I'll ask my doctor about the Gunnark. But, wearing these glasses won't solve my astigmatism issues, and this clearly is a part of my problem.

Something I've learned during the past year, is that eye strain is different for everyone. I get headaches, others get blurry vision, neck pain, while some simply have some slight eye irritation. I guess research on cvs is still in its infancy. General tips like changing contrast don't do anything for me.

However, sleeping always resolves my issues. It's strange that you get pain after sleeping.

lower the brightness or wear solar glasses

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

yeah lowering brightness will help. This was even worse on the old CRT monitors, i dont have it anywhere near as bad with the LCDs.

Lower brightness unfortunately does not help...

Have you dental or jaw problems, like teeth or jaw not correctly positioned, unintentionally clenching your jaw, etc? They often cause problems also in other parts of the body, like headache, backache...
