Owch. You would've thought the Guiness World Records would thoroughly ensure proper permissions etc.

Public Domain, they don't need permission, just like how other news sources can cite VGC information.

Meant Fair Use, not public domain.

Not to mention works published abroad aren't protected under US Copyright, so they don't need permission on that basis.

The Guinness book gets pretty much worldwide release, so unless they remove the citings, it's not just the question about US copyrights. But since numbers are public, are cited as they are and they tell the source, they don't actually need permission. Or atleast so i have understood it.

Well if we would gather to ioi:s home (since he's the one who buys the boose), even if we would be able to gather 1% of VGC member, we would have a hell of a party, about 150 participants. Now there would be an official, who'd make sure with an alcometer, that everyone would have amount equivalent of at least 2/1000 alcohol in our blood. And everyone would need to blow once in an hour (alcometer, not the official). I think we would have fun couple of months that way.

Okay, Britain can meet at ioi's, I can host the midwest USA... who else? We can link them all by webcam

ioi was kidding. Copyright applies to specific creative arrangements of text/images/music, not the ideas and facts contained within them. You don't need permission to take information from another source, unless you copy large portions of text/images directly from that source (small amounts, like a few paragraphs, are still ok). The worst they could be accused of is plagiarism, which isn't illegal and which doesn't apply here since they clearly cited their source. This kind of free sharing of facts is the basis of all journalism and academics.
