What matters is that we're hardly in a position to tell other cultures they should be more open-minded about sexuality when same-sex marriage isn't legal in all 50 states.

You don't think the U.S. is in a position to tell other countries to stop killing and jailing homosexuals because some states don't legally recognize gay marrige? (It's extralegal, not illegal nor "banned".) Should we also not encourage other countries to stop cutting off the hands of thieves because we put thieves in prison, too? Are we hypocrites for thinking girls should be able to go to school when we have a (largely mythical) 23 cent/hour wage cap ourselves?

That sounds like a serious lack of perspective on your part.

See also some of my later posts where I went into more detail, and try not to sensationalize my statements so much. I don't recall using the word hypocritical, nor saying we should be silent.

"I certainly don't think we should just look away while other countries are committing atrocities, if anything I simply want our country to practice what it preaches." -- that was me like four posts before yours.

Not in those words, sure, but saying that someone is in no position to criticize is generally interpreted to mean that they are being hypocritical and should be silent. And last time I checked, people aren't prosecuted for homosexuality anywhere in the west, so, er... we do practice what we preach.
