To be honest even if the XB didn't mess things up the PS4 would still be ahead and EASILY to be honest. THe PS3 sold at a much faster rate than the 360 due to PS being a bigger rband WW than XB. If not for the $600 price point and year late launch last gen would not have ended a tie more than likely. So with launching at teh same time as the PS4 it would have been even more clear. Sure the US would have been closer but everywhere else would not be all that different imo.

I still think they be even if both were at $400 and no DRM PR failure involved.

Fair enough but can I ask how? Or what makes you think that? Because outide of the US and maybe UK Sony outsells them EVERYWHERE do you think those two markets alone would offest EVERYTHING else with them launching at the same time with the same price? I feel it owuld be close but even? Can't possibly see how.

The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...

Aside from the boring, near non-sensical argument, I can't get my head around the title. 'Smoke and mirrors' implies that the sales lead isn't real, that Sony have done some dishonest tricks to pump up the appearance of sales. But the sales are real, the lead is real, the question in the article is 'is it deserved?' but that doesn't match the title at all.

Which makes me think that the original author is either 1) very young or 2) not well educated, because they clearly don't understand what the phrase 'smoke and mirrors' actually means.

Or 3) wrote a boring article and needed hits.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the article yesterday.  I figured it would be someone going over the sales numbers and making the case that Sony was lying about the 10M+ sold.  Guess not.

I like in the end he say's these are just observation that one' able to make, and oppinion seriously though if MS hadnt bundled kinect and put less hardware in the box and kicked gamers in the balls only to do a 360 turn, they might be doing better, they pissed thier fan base off and thats why sales are lacking.

That's hugely significant, especially because the PS4 is dominating Europe and Japan, perhaps by an even larger margin than the experts anticipated.

Wait whut?

"Smoke and mirrors."

Yeah, and I might win the lottery

I think thee biggest reason Sony is dominating so handily is last years E3 . Had Microsoft not shot themselves in the foot so bad with the always online drm and terrible PR, myself and a good many of my friends (10+) would have gotten the Xbox one instead but we all have PS4's now.

No backwards compatibility also helped my decision , not that PS4 is backwards compatible either , but I had spent thousands on my 360 collection both digital and physical and had the Xbox one been BC I would have gone Xbox just for the sake of backlog. Did not have a PS3 so no BC did not bother me with the PS4.

I don't think smoke and mirrors is the right term.

Smoke and Mirrors means you are lead (i.e. tricked) to see something else when something else is true. You can't really dispute the sale numbers.

It would be smoke and mirrors if Sony counted every PS4 produced and claimed it to be 10 million sold to consumer to make it appear like it is way ahead.
