Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 week of Destiny > week of Japan launch...

No, seriously.

According to VGChartz, PS4 have sold 468,610 the week of 22 February versus the 472,885 of last week.

That is incredible...

What Sony gets and MS don't is that it is the online games that require connectivity and lots of friend circles that push most of the sales, exclusive or not.

This is why Sony backed up Destiny heavily as it will help sell more PS4, and those people's friends will also buy one to stay in the circle. This is not a brand effect but rather "network effects", which is exactly why X360 was popular in the past. Sony uses the same tactics against MS this time around.

Yes, not only the exclusives but online games like Destiny have been the true system sellers since the beginning of the 7th generation.

And that isn't at all surprising. Japan is a small country so a big game releasing in for the whole world really should out do the Japanese launch.

PS4 launched with over 300k in Japan. For any non-holiday week to beat that is incredible.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

With a multiplatform game doing this sort of damage, an uncharted or Gran Turismo launch is going to be crazy. I don't ever remember PS3 doing these kinds of numbers outside holiday or EU launch.

Not surprising.

These numbers are higher than I thought they would be.

Microsoft tried the very same thing with Titanfall.

eh? Microsoft haven't been getting online multiplayer orientated games? What is Titanfall then?

I am having a dejavu... The same exact question, and the same exact misunderstanding! Where in the quote above I say, Microsoft didn't try to pull off a similar strategy? It says, what drives consoles is not necessarily the exclusive games but networking effects. Microsoft doesn't see that! They try to keep pulling off some exclusive games (by buying them) without trying to create original and well established content first and before reaching to a mass momentum for network effects to be effective.

Sony used the leveling power of Bungie, and their double amount of user base whereas Titanfall was released on a 3 million user base, appealing to a much smaller audience (mainly US and English speaking countries) before ever establishing a brand name. Although the team behind Titanfall is known for Call of Duty, I believe, the game was always a third party, without any brand recognition advantage.

I did the math before and I will not repeat it here but shortly, the PS4 sales in US Sept 13 week is 54% more than XB1 versus 27% difference overall, which means the gap has widened even more this week (not only in absolute numbers but also in terms of market share %).
