Xbox One launch in China delayed until the “end of this year,” reports Microsoft

After announcing plans to officially launch the Xbox One in China on September 23, Microsoft has pushed back that date to an incredibly vague “end of this year” in a recent press release.

“Despite strong and steady progress, we are going to need a bit more time to deliver the best experiences possible for our fans in China,” Micorosoft explained via press release. Still, despite the delay, it appears that Corporate Vice President Yusuf Mehdi is finding the response in China a lot more uplifting than the turnout in Japan, and is “thrilled with the response” they’ve seen in China, including pre-orders beyond their expectations and “growing anticipation.”

Even though the official console launch in China has now been pushed back without a date, Microsoft is inviting fans to a special event on September 22 at the Oriental Pearl Tower. Here, fans will be able to try out the Xbox One and several different games, as well as vie to win one of 100 consoles that will be given away.

Gamers in China who had pre-ordered the Xbox One in anticipation of the September 22 launch will be on track to receive their consoles first, per Enwei Xie, General Manager of Xbox at Microsoft China, along with “an added bonus.” Perhaps a free game or accessory?

This is funny! It will american fans more sad than anyone in china.

Maybe they wait until they have as many pre-orders as they had in Japan?

I wonder what the reason for the delay is? I mean it couldn't be lack of units so possibly there has been an issue with software content or licencing that the Chinese Government is not happy with?

Either way I am anticipating a healthy response in China for both the Xbone and PS4 (whenever they finally release)

they already have more

p.s its old news, so lock :)

If it was a lack of preorders they would have delayed the launch much sooner. Given that this announcement was only days prior to the launch I would say that the Chinese Govt pulled a dirty on Microsoft for reasons unknown to us.

How the hell do you go from a launch within 3 days to a delay of 3+ months?

This.  It was definitely GOVT interference rather than MS incompetence.  Still, home consoles will do terribly in China. So many misunderstand the kind of buyer for $400+ electronics over there. It's to show off. Apple has cachet, Microsoft does not. Oddly Buick has taken off there as a premium brand, but that's a car that you can easily show off so apples/oranges. I fully believe that they should have waited a few years and launched on redesign with a subsidized $99 version and subscription package, discless. Basically you agree to rent it for a year at 99 down and 20 a month, and you get free games every month and can buy them as well for new releases.

What's the point of buying a console in China when you can just make your own?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I believe MS is still being investigated for violating anti-trust laws. I think it's because of this, the X1's Chinese launch has been delayed. However, it's not just the China government MS is not getting along with. MS is also not getting along with the Chinese consumers...
