Forums - Sales Discussion - the real winner of the console wars

Real winners are the third-party publishers, thus far.

THIS THIS THIS!!! X1000

With Destiny, Madden, GTA, Watchdogs, who needs 1st party development nowadays? Only hardcore gamers it seems...

To make things even more confusing, Samsung HDDs aren't actually Samsung. They're really Seagate, since Seagate bought Samsung's hard drive division a few years ago. xD

How could Samsung support their console if they launched one? It just seems unclear right now.

But i guess people didn't expect Sony to launch a console that would become the most successful two generations in a row. Sony didn't really make games before the Playstation. As far as i know Sony didn't make much for their MSX computers

If Samsung were to enter the console biz, they would probably need to buy a publisher like ZeniMax and start up some studios. Samsung could also try to buy the Xbox brand, but I doubt they have the money for that.

Sony was in the right place, at the right time. The SNES was waning, and Sega had begun it's suicide run with the 32X. Nintendo going with carts added fuel to the fire.

I guess it was good timing but did Sony own any game developers before they released the Playstation 1?

Not to diminish Sony's merit, but the conditions were excellent for a success on their first try. They could still make a big difference on hardware/software fighting one to one with Sega (make a hardware easier to develop than Saturn and said to be more 3D friendly), the leader was extremely late, they got excellent exlusivity because of that and the choice of the CD (FF7, etc.), which made them free for a year, it became the standard, etc.

Nowadays, if Samsung made a console on the next generation, it would be a intel compliant cpu, PC graphic card  (or amd apu which is the same), let me guess... with a bluray, game download, in the 300~400$ price range, the color would be black. Facing 3 opponents with similar hardware, price, software kit, features, better first party, and for 2 of them excellent third party support.

yeah i agree it would be hard for a 4th competitor to succedd especially if Samsung (or any other company) tried to go after the same audiences

They did buy Psygnosis, which later turned in to Studio Liverpool (RIP Wipeout).

I wasn't sure as the original Wipeout was on Saturn and PC as well. Suprising there isn't a wipeout for PS4 though

The real winner is AMD, they deliver the GPU for the Wii U, Xbox One and PS4 and the CPU for the Xbox One and PS4.

its not nintendo, its not ony and its not microsoft its samsung, both harddrives are made by samsund

No.

Xbox One has Samsung HDDs: https://de.ifixit.com/Teardown/Xbox+One+Teardown/19718

But the PS4 has HGST (Western Digital) HDDs: https://de.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation+4+Teardown/19493

So clearly Western Digital is winning the console war lol.  Just can't accept that Sony is winning O_o so awarded the console war to Xbox One's HDD...

haha omg lol

 not bad

You're right, Wipeout was released on Saturn, N64 and PC even though Sony owned Psygnosis. I don't get it, but it happened, and I doubt it will ever come to PS4.
