Forums - Microsoft Discussion - X1 Free Game promotion was a success in the USA.

USA Hardware by Platform

PlatformWeekly (change)Total
PS4 162,354 (+262%) 4,271,618
XOne 105,437 (+208%) 3,371,776

I would call the free game with X1 promotion in America a success. For a GAME that was supposed to sell PS4 consoles there was only 57k difference. I am really surprised by this. I really thought with how high the Destiny PS4 Bundle had been on Amazon that it would have been a miniumum of 100k.  The 227k difference in software sales between versions is more in line with my expectations. Although..   X1/X360 sales were only 27k behind PS4/PS3 sales. The X360 version outsold the PS3 by 200k.

Anyone else surprised by this?

I am very surprised which is why I think NPD will prove these numbers wrong.

Of course it was but how much was for destiny and not the free game?? Also this is VGCHARTZ whose weekly numbers are iffy at best, maybe wait for adjustments, I bet Ps4 was undertracked as well.

The xbone boost was definitely more to do with the free game but there's no way the gap was that small

Not surprised. X1 still has a good rapport with many customers in the US. A quality free game sweetens deal alot and made X1 a better value propisition than PS4. Additionally MS offered $50 gift cards on top of the free game promo which I think got lots of would be buyers off the fence quickly.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Yeah, the promotion was a success. Now we have to see where sales return, because sometimes these limited time deals just bring sales forward, and subsequent weeks are worse than before the deal.

Interestingly, if Amazon is an indicator they are running out of stock of many XB1 models.  This deal may have not been just to save face in Destiny week, but also to clear stock for the upcoming special edition consoles (SSO & COD).

September might see this... I think With October/Novemebr releases will help those months even before Holiday buying kicks in strong... Might have been smarter to do the free game for ALL of September so the last few weeks didnt't fall off..

the overall gap is already 900k? Interesting

I do think the PS4 was slightly under tracked in the USA this week (and over tracked in the EU), but the numbers themselves aren't hugely surprising.

Destiny was always going to sell a lot of X1's too. It's a sci-fi shooter made by Bungie. I'd say that particular combination has already proved its sales viability on Xbox platforms :p Add in the free game promotion and a significant boost was pretty much guaranteed.

What do you guys think the sales will be in the following week?

I think PS4 is likely to stay around 300k and XB1 around 100k or below.
