Forums - Gaming Discussion - Forbes: Retail Hallucinations And The Pointlessness Of Owning A PlayStation 4 or Xbox One

I have to agree with this article as of right now. It doesn't help when the most appealing product on the ps4 is TLOU and on xbox one MCC, both remasters of games from older generations.

It really takes alot of time to make a game + devs follow the players(wich is where the money is at :p) and atm theres still a huge amount of players on ps3/xbox360. It would be weird and unlogical if they didnt make crossgens and remasters at the start of a new gen.And like history told us it will probably get alot better :)

Ouch.

Smh Nintendo only gamer.

Sigh... can't please everyone can you?

Yeah, especially when I was drunk. ;-D That and I am fimiliar with noname.

Dumb article you can say that about any product that is not a life necessity....makes no sense. The market decides.

classic disregard with the obvious ad hominem attack. Completely overlooking the fact that I didn't even quote you. Ironically, claiming that I fail to grasp a basic point.

heres the tldr: It is hypocritical to leave the Wii U out of critical discussion when concerning Next Gen, for whatever reason, especially when the Wii U is indefensibly guilty of the same "folly" that the author finds with the PS4 and XB1.

I was quoting what Ryan quoted in the article. Its hypocritical because it chatises the XB1/PS4 on the premise of not being innovative enough, when gamers had the Wii U minus the tablet 8 years ago if we are being fair, because the 360 didn't have blue ray support, but the PS3 had both blu-ray support and free network. I never mentioned the Wii U's predecessors nor did I mention the Wii U's horsepower.

You're not being objective at all, so I don't even know why you used that adverb. 1. Is a red herring, as the Wii U's predecessors had nothing to do with my claim of hypocrisy, you just brought it in to change goal posts when I was comparing generations not consoles to their predecessors, 2. is your opinion and has no bearing here because whether the Wii U was left out because "no one cares about it" or "its doing something different" is besides the point, it is hypocritcal to assert that the PS4/XB1 don't bring anything new to this generation, without mentioning the Wii U as well, regardless of why it was omitted.

Because I am asking for impartiality I reek of insecurity? And yet, omitting the Wii U from the "Next Gen being Pointless" doesn't? Aside from hardware and software that came from this era, i.e games, wifi and USB versions, flash hdds, which can be installed in last gen consoles as well, what things are majorily different from last gen? I don't care how different, this gen is from the last gen, but if your gonna say a console is pointless because its not different enough and then leave out the Wii U, because no one cares about it, that is not only biased and hypocritcal, but its also insulting to the Wii U itself. Is it not a good enough system to be critized as well? Or oh because its made by Nintendo, or oh because its flopping we should leave it alone. Just like we left the Vita alone...oh wait.

Lastly, don't project yourself and your beleifs on to me. I love how you claim that I care about horsepower so much, despite only you talking about it, then completely dismiss my argument based on an allegation against me you fabricated out of thin air.

If anything, I'm the one defending the Wii U, because I'm saying its bullshit to leave it out of critical concern, you are the one saying "no one cares about it" or its horsepower is what it has in common with 9 year old systems.

I don't have to pretend that the Wii U is masivelly different from last generation. Clearly, I don't give a damn, I only buy a console for what I want to do with it, For all intents and purposes Nintendo's PS3+ level console, managing at the very least to be last gen even if it is last powerwise this gen. I don't even see how that is relevant to the discussion. That means nothing because I have repeatidly stated that I will get a Wii U when the new smash comes out, it could be a game cube with Wii U tapled on the cover and I would still buy it.

Meh, you are safe since you gave the hint it is a joke. Or is it?

On topic: people just expect too much of their new toys, they think their lifes will get better or something, which is pretty idiotic.

Granted, I have lost some weight with Xbox Fitness and Wii Fit U and had some fun with Killzone Shadowfall, but these consoles are nothing but toys, what the heck do these consumers expect from them except to be a little better than their predecessors.

And indeed they are, the WiiU is miles better than the Wii and the Ps4 is way cooler and faster than the PS3. What more do we want?

If that does not sound interesting, do not buy the thing. It is like buying a cooler car. It will take you from point A to point B, but with more style than the old one did.

If that does not appeal to you, God bless you, keep your old console and be happy.

I am very happy with my three new consoles, but that is because I do not expect any toy or object to change my life.

True, and when you take into consideration just how large the 360 and PS3 install base is then its acceptable for there to be such a large number of cross gen games although I'm still disappointed in what is being offered.

Technically it's pointless to own anything that isn't a need, so other than food, water, and shelter everything is pointless in owning

Lets take NFL games for example here.

This is what the NES was capable of.

This is what the SNES was capable of.

This is what the PS1 was capable of.

This is what the PS2 was capable of.

This is what the Xbox 360 was capable of.

And finally, the PS4.

This is what this guy is talking about. Each console jump, games were not only prettier, but they could do things unimaginable before. But as you can see, the jump to PS4/Xbone is... just, no. Games are just prettier ports of last generation's games (hell, TLOU and GTA5 don't even try to HIDE that fact). Maybe developers will shock us and start actually doing something with them, that has yet to be seen but until then, this article is spot on.

People need to understand a few things first We are at a point now where we are not going to see great graphical differences between consoles like with did with going from the Gen 5 to Gen 6 (Biggest leap IMO) or Gen 6 to 7 (big leap again). Thing is while Gen 6 IMO showed us the biggest leap ( I will never forget Sonic Adventure on DC) Gen 7 gave us consoles that were a head of there time as we seen great leaps in processing power (Dual/Quad core cpu's) and happens to be one of the main reasons why we probably don't really see a HUGE difference like we are used to seeing in the past as last gen is still pretty relevant.

With Gen 8 we are going to see more of a refinement in how games look rather then huge differences. These refinements will come in the form of better AI, effects and physics. I am all for that as I am really happy with how games look but I want more realistic effects seen in gen 7 that were MUCH better then the previous gen but still left me wanting a little more.

The last place anyone should go to for gaming information or opinions is Forbes... they have proven they understand very little about the industry and through there unfounded opinions around as though they should be taken as fact.

What really gets me is how he does not make reference to console parity that we seen with Destiny (the most popular example) and other games also... You look at games like Infamous: SS and while they could have been done on Gen 7 hardware it would have not looked nearly as good same with Killzone.

It's fine to have an opinion but if you are writing for Forbes you need to do better, this was horrible, however it did show a great example of talking out of your ass.
