Forums - Gaming Discussion - Forbes: Retail Hallucinations And The Pointlessness Of Owning A PlayStation 4 or Xbox One

I disagree with the article. My PS4 is a big upgrade from my 360. The reason I got a PS4 is for Exclusive games like TLOU:Remastered, Killzone, DriveClub, etc.... definitely a reason too own it.

It's always amusing to see someone whom, instead of writing about the true dynamics of a market, they just state their personal opinion and conclude the market is wrong/delusional/hallucinating/whatever.

I'd say that gaming is so much a part of many people's lives that many buy new consoles even if the change is more evolutionary than revolutionary.

More revolutionary change (which is successful) like the Wii is rare and not to be expected on a regular basis. In this generation gamers are showing they are hungry for new consoles, and choosing a conventional console done well and rejecting half baked novelties.

Agreed.  I think these types of statements/articles seem to come from two camps.  Either PC elites, who are mad that the console market isn't actually dying, or fans of other consoles, who are mad that their console isn't on top.  The fact is, we aren't going to get too much in the way of gameplay improvement, since everything else has been done.  Kinda like how they say their are less than 10 basic stories in storytelling, new ones are the same with just little tweaks here or there, yet we still go to the movies.

The truth is, people love the advancements in tech, which is why they buy new things.  Whether it be better smartphones, more powerful GPUs, or new consoles.  If everyone was just happy with what they had, then we wouldn't have advancements in any tech, and no one would buy new products.  Not only would that lead to an economic crash, it also would make life boring.  I just wish people would put their biases aside and realize that this market is fine.

Always the same thing, comparing end of gen games with first year games which are made to run on older consoles as well. Pointless owning a new console in the first year(s), unless you like sharper visuals, faster updates, better UI, shorter loading times.

Not that there aren't any improvements besides looking prettier. For example Minecraft's map size on ps4/xb1 is 36 times bigger than on ps3/360. ps3 and 360 were limited by 512mb total memory. We haven't yet begun to see what developers can squeeze out of 4 to 8gb. For now it's indeed just prettier graphics as the game engines still need to run on last gen or were carried over from last gen.
