During a presentation event in Tokyo, I had a chance to have a chat with the producer of theTales Of series Hideo Baba, and ask him if he has any plans to release Tales of Zestiria on PS4 as well, considering that other developers (for instance Atlus with Persona 5) are going down the route.
According to Baba-san it takes a long time to develop an RPG, and when the team started to work on Tales of Zestiria they thought the PS3 would be the most popular console at release, which is why they decided to release on PS3 only.
The shift from PS2 to PS3 was slow, yet the shift from PS3 to PS4, especially in the west much faster compared to the last generation.
At the moment though, Baba-san doesn’t have any plans to release the game on PS4. Yet, the new consoles are already doing well in the market, so maybe some times in the future a next generation release could be considered. While there aren’t specific ideas or plans it could happen in the future.
Baba-san also mentioned that for the moment the strategy is to release Tales Of games only on PlayStation format, and the Xbox exclusive experiment done with Tales of Vesperia won’t be repeated.
