Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anti second hand DRM back in hand at MS

http://gamersyndrome.com/2014/news/xbox-news/chinese-xbox-one-games-contain-one-time-activation-code-cannot-be-resold/

Xbox One’s software in China will contain a single-use activation code, therefore preventing its games from being resold, according to photos posted on the ali213 gaming forums.

Chinese Xbox One systems will also be region-locked, according to that same post. This comes as a surprise, as Microsoft was set on reversing its original Xbox One resale policies after its original E3 2013 reveal. The policies applied in China are strikingly similar to those presented at E3 2013 (region lock, no second-hand sales), with the exception of the system always having to be online.

There have been no official statements by Microsoft in regards to why they have implemented these policies for Xbox One’s release. It may have to do with the fact that Xbox One is the first gaming and entertainment console approved for sale in China since June 2000, when the country’s minister of culture issued a ban on the sale of video game consoles.

Upon its September 23 release, Xbox One will be priced at 3699 chinese yuan, which converts to roughly 600 US dollars. Software will cost between 15 and 40 US dollars.

Will MS get another backlash or people outside of China won't care because it won't affect them, chinese won't be able to complain much because of government gaging or will we get another set of serious backlash? Could this be the first step towards the reintroduction of DRM preventing second hand sells? Besides that there is the region locking.

I understand that they are probably locking it because of smaller RRP (that is actually a nice point) and region lock because of censorship. But it really is a heinous face of capitalism that sometimes for profit companies won't care about democracy (and MS isn't alone on this)... how many companies would stand for people rights if that would mean less profits?

Chinas plagued with piracy. It's normal to find a store selling an xbox360 pre loaded with almost any 360 game worth playing... Many of them with unofficial Chinese translations.

The legal xbox one is going to be limited to the games the gov lets in... So no GTAV or many other big name games.

I can understand why Microsoft was in a rush to be first in china. They have the hardest fight.

The xbox one will take off only if it's hacked.

LOL the Xbox One will be dead on arrival in China.

Brazil is plagued with Piracy, most of our consoles is imported from US on the grey market and have several games loaded as well... anyway this wasn't tried here... I believe the reason for the lock is because profit is smaller per unit, it will sell little and that justifies the higher price on HW.

My guess is that they're doing this, because when China lifted the console ban, they said they don't want any violent games setting a bad influence, or something like that. If they do that, then it makes sense for China I guess

This is XOne, not 360, and I think that there is no way to mod and run copies on XOne, so this DRM move really cannot be blamed on piracy, but on MS finding a fertile ground for testing their pre-180 policies.

Region block on the console because of the bans make sense.

The games also being region coded since they are cheaper and if exported could damage profit in other places also make sense...

The one activation thing tough have no correlation with the ban or even piracy, just a way to sell cheaper and have good revenue and since it is 33% discounted most people probably won't complain... but it could be missused if got out of there.

I think you missunderstand me. I'm not explaining the reasoning behind the drm. I'm given just a few of the reasons why the XBone will fail here regardless.
As the original post says the regon lock will be because of the censorship issue.

Look at the OP, I'm putting most of the blame on China and a part own every company preffering profit over people rights.
