Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo's "Family/Kids First" Console Formula Simply Doomed To Fail?

Yes but i don't even thinks that's really a strategy of theirs, they just don't know how to make games of other types. Its a competence issue, if they believed they could make a Halo or COD they would at least try.

Metroid outclasses both those games.

Your hopefull opinion, and wish.

I enjoyed reading your post.

I remember Nintendo of America didn't want to see Night Trap on his console back in early 90s before ESRB coming.

Well, they aimed for the hardcorez with the WiiU and failed miserably, so I think they better stick with the kiddy audience.

Targetting the hardcore with a tablet is hardly targetting them

Night trap wouldn't of worked on SNES or N64. It used video. None of Nintendo's consoles could of allowed that. Unless they planned on doing some sort of platform game type version.

No they don't see Wii U as that. Read Miyamoto's interview with Edge magazine

yeah but Halo and COD aren't really good games though they do sell a lot

I do agree with the original poster though...  they need to get rid of the stigma that the system is just for 'fun for the whole family' and adopt a sexier image while not losing the family friendly one.  The next system should look slick, have a slick name, and have a massive assortment of "adult" games and a marketing campaign that is designed to sell the sizzle --like it's a sportscar, not a station wagon

He said they're giving up on trying to chase the casual player demographic as smartphones have filled that need (note: this largely is actually adults).

But the Wii U still struggles in that it is still the "Disney-style-console" of the bunch. It's made not only for kids, but definitely with kids high on the priority list and its largely sold on Disney-esque mascot based exclusives. We're all in stores, and we all know the Nintendo section (full of bright primary colors and plenty of happy, colorful mascots as far as the eye can see) is a stark difference from the Sony/MS sections.

Look at the Wii. Its far from failing.

With that said, its a hit or miss thing. But Nintendo clearly wants to target the whole segment and not just kids.

miss miss miss hit miss

It seems more of a miss thing and one fluke.

How apply N64, Gamecube or WiiU to the Family/Kids first formula? With Goldeneye? With Rogue Squadron? With Metroid Prime? With COD or Assassins Creed?

They tried the Family-formula once, with the Wii.

I don't think its doom, it's just Nintendo playing to their natural strength. Every now and then, it works insanely well.

I do believe they sort-of realize they'd be more successful if the had stronger 'mature' appeal. Children follow what the 'older kids' are into. But they should have done that by promoting AC, Batman, and CoD on their home console rather than moneyhatting Devil's Third.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
