The previous 500million number is sold to stores, or aka the "shipped" number. This one's the sold through to customer number.
Activision better hope destiny is bigger than launch in the long run or else they might lose out on their initial cash out.

65% sell through in 5 days is very good if you ask me. Also they haven't spent 500M on the game, YET. It's the amount reserved for the upcoming 10 years.
Activision making 500+ million off selling copies to stores and the stores selling 325 million worth to consumers are two different, and equally plausible things.

Activision did make $500 million, through sales to retailers (and digital downloads) who have now made back $325 million selling to their customers.
