Forums - Gaming Discussion - Chinese Xbox One Games Contain A One-Time Activation Code, Cannot Be Resold

Lol, blaming piracy or the Chinese government for these measures. Pirates are much better off importing a region free console for much less. $600 in store for a DRM region locked system with limited games? The official software might be cheaper in store, pirated software for the cheaper imported system is much much less...

MS is simply continuing their experiments to kill/control second hand sales. No retailers to piss off in China, so perfect opportunity to implement their original plans.

No surprises here. Its China after all.

Sure, MS implementing part of their DRM on the Chinese consoles is a surprise, but it makes sense due to the rampant piracy. The question is... will it work? Sure, it has a one-time activation code, but they'll find a way to circumvent it if there's no always online requirement to monitor it.

But still, we'll get to see how the DRM really works, which will be interesting.

Anyone pinning this on piracy is completely mistaken. Do you really think that Chinese pirates wait for their regional release? That this will now greatly hinder the pirates?
All pirated games can be easily bought and pirated in EU, US or Japan, and sold in China along with region-free consoles.

This is purely MS finding a fertile soil for their pre-180 policies. There will be no retailer backlash because there is no 2nd hand market, and the customers are not used to complaining.

Remember this is China we're talking about. I'm not surprised at all. If it was region free, I guess the Chinese government wouldn't be too happy that a product officially sold in China could play games not intended or allowed in the country. Also remember the piracy there. Not saying I like it, but it might be neccessary at the moment.

Yep.

No... Not saying it works like that but here is one way to do it without the need to have a 24h online connection:

This would be costly for MS: One time activation code provided with the media which contain the data encrypted with a unique key... The activation code will contact MS servers to get this unique key (and flag it as redeemed). The user can then decrypt the data and install it (and activate it locally like today's Xbox One games). The key can even be bind to the account.

The other one is that there is one time activation to bind it to the console (you cannot play the game directly with the data on the disk) and then you do not need an internet connection. Again, like it is already working today with the "main Xbox One" console feature.

So no, the system does not have to be connected to the internet pretty much all the time

How do you imagine in your scenarios where the "code" is activated and marked as used in a store that they will be able to control it being registered on a system which is not connected to the net? How would the activated key know it was the first xbox1 it was being installed to if the first machine didn't flag the key as being used as it had done for offline PC games.

I mean you get an "activated" key in the store, you bring it home, install the game on your offline machine.... go to a neighbours house and install the game on his offline machine, how would there be any link between the 2 machines to not allow the code be used the 2nd time?

Already explained it... One time internet connection required. (not a 24h online internet connection like you mentionned).

It's because of China, it's a country full of piracy.

How can you even do piracy on the xbox one? I haven't heard of any hacks or mods yet?
