Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sakurai talks lack of Ice Climbers in Smash Bros

Well that sucks. We'll probably have to wait until DLC to play Ice Climbers.

The 3DS version could have half the characters and I wouldn't complain. But not only are they severely damaging Smash's potential to drive sales of the Wii U by having a 3DS version at all; they're actually limiting the Wii U version because of the 3DS version.

They're giving people just about no reason to wait and get it for Wii U. In fact, they're literally TAKING AWAY reasons, one after another. Because Nintendo.

Considering the only thing the two games share are a roster your comment holds no valid reason for concern. The Wii U version of Smash will likely sell better and will be better than the 3DS version. The 3DS version was made with portability in mind and the Wii U version will be finished with the Wii U hardware in mind. Also the New 3DS is said to have smash exclusive features.

Sakurai talks lack of Ice Climbers in Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, as well as release dates

- Ice Climbers were running in the Wii U version
- due to the required hardware power, the team couldn’t make them work in the 3DS game
- with Ice Climbers unlikely to have another installment in their franchise, high priority wasn't given to them
- Wii U/3DS versions having different release dates is due to debugging
- if both games shared the same release date, the titles could have slipped to 2015
- Akihiro Toda, who was behind the texts in the Mother series, wrote the trophy descriptions

If 3DS Smash ends up being a good way to play the game, I really don't see why the Wii U one would sell as well on one quarter the install base.  In fact it seems to me like every time they announce a new feature, it's a 3DS exclusive.  They're shooting themselves in the foot.  If the graphics are the only major difference, people aren't going to buy a whole console just to take advantage of that when they've already got a 3DS.

Hopefully they're just holding back on giving us much on the Wii U version until the 3DS one is out.  Because I'm not really seeing a reason to wait.

It's time to get real, man. Everyone who has played Ice Climbers thinks of those characters as nothing more than a joke addition, because that game sucked so hard.

Alright, I'll just be over here playing Ice Climbers...in the S tier...

That was one of my fear when they announce both version. That fear became stronger when they said both version will have the same roster. The fear that the WiiU version will suffer because they want both version to be on par with each other. I hope I'm wrong wich is still possible since we don't know yet what will be unique to the WiiU version, but one thing has now been confirmed, ppl playing smash on WiiU won't be able to play as Ice Climbers purely because the 3DS version of the game exists, and that sucks.

When the stages are different what is preventing them from making Ice Climbers a WiiU only feature? Its not like the game is going be cross-platform-play anyway (was cancelled)

Both games also have different single player modes.

I wonder the same. Also, what is so bad about the moveset of Ice Climbers, that they require more horsepower? Maybe Namco can add it as a DLC on WiiU (with other stuff, like the MK8 DLC).

It's probably the fact there would be 5 players on screen at once.

Or 8.

I'm not sure why they couldn't release both at the same time though... I'm not saying they SHOULD, but couldn't they just release both on November 21st?

Huh, so it was CPU problems, seriously?

That makes no damn sense.
