Forums - Sales Discussion - Sorry, Bayonetta 2 will not be a system seller (nor sell more than 1 million).

Global lifetime sales for Bayonetta 2 will be:

Less than 500k 124 17.06%

500k to 1 million 333 45.80%

More than 1 million 270 37.14%

Total:727

Don't know if this means much, but I was somewhat shocked when I went in to buy Bayonetta 2 at my local GameStop this afternoon. I went in at around 12:30PM (they opened at 11AM), and the guy told me they only had 4 copies of the game left. Now, this could just be because they didn't order very many, or it may be because a lot of people preordered it so they didn't have many to sell to people walking in looking to buy it (the GameStop guy did scold me for not preordering it). Either way, I was kind of shocked to see they had so few after not ever being open for 2 hours.

Okay, I was wrong. Bayonetta 2 did move consoles in the 1st week.

Global week sale went from 42.1k to 51.4k. In the US, it went from 15.5k to about 21k.

It moved about 9,300 extra consoles in the 1st week for Bayonetta 2 per VGChartz data.

It may well walk, or strut, its way to a million given word of mouth and reviews.

It won't get to a million, but Nintendo should greenlight Bayonetta 3 anyway.

It's a unique brand, one they need more of, they can build on this and likely Fusion will have a far larger userbase than the Wii U does (at least for Nintendo's sake, one would hope so).

They can also re-release Bayonetta 1 + 2 on Fusion too.

I think Zombi U is insanely overtracked by VGChartz too. If it had shipped anywhere near 1 million, Ubi Soft would've pooped out Zombi U-2 by now. I'm not even sure DKC: Tropical Freeze will hit 1 million shipped, and that's one of Nintendo's top IP.

It was beyond doubt that some the true fans of the first game would buy a WIi U for it. So there's no doubt at all that it is somewhat of a system seller. However the number of true fans of the first game is relatively small, so the number of systems it will sell will be low. In the normal meaning of the term (100%+ HW boost on launch, with an increased baseline) Bayo 2 is not s system seller.

The truth is the more I play Bayo + Bayo 2 is the series is simply too weird to ever be a huge "blockbuster" seller. It's so weird and bizarre at times all you can do is literally laugh out loud in response.

That said I'm having a blast with it, but it really is a "real" hardcore game, it's not something I think the general "guy who buys COD and Madden every year" would be into.

It's like a Wes Anderson movie such as The Royal Tenenbaums or The Grand Budapest Hotel is never going to make huge dollars like a superhero or James Cameron movie, but it has its place in the market and its own (albeit smaller, but very dedicated) fan base.
