even if it doesn't reach 1 million, at least Wii U owners will have the chance to play this glorious game

Thats all that was needed to be said. No need to bring in sly stabs at other games.

I'm curious what people are using to define it as a success or flop. I think 1 million would be a very respectable number even though that means they definitely lost money on it.

Which is your estimated budget? If they distribute 1 million copies, that means around 28 million in revenue (remember Nintendo itself is the platform holder and they don't pay licenses fees to themselves). I think for this game the budget would be on the lines of 20-25 million, so It think with just 850k units they should go even and start making a profit, and I do believe they will struggle to reach that number, but if they do go to 1 million that should make it profit.

Bayonetta sold 2 million between the PS3 and 360 and lost money. Wonderful 101 had 1.5x the budget of Bayonetta and we can only assume that Bayonetta 2 is on par or higher (especially with the Bayonetta 1 port and added DLC). They've already spent more on advertising and exposure for this game than the first Bayonetta, it's going to take a lot to profit on.

Bayonetta did not lost money, at least there is no quote for it, the closest thing I found was a SEGA-Sammy quarter report when they had sold 1.1 million units and they made a profit. But the game was a dissapointment for SEGA who were expecting higher sales and more profit, most likely they recovered the original budget and made a small profit on it, and they were not the plataform holder, which usually mean that they earn 8-10 U$ less from each copy sold.

Bayonetta 1 port should be pretty cheap, around 3 millions to pull-off (Ubisoft mentioned that their ports should cost around 1 million and I assume Nintendo itself can provide better tools), and from what I heard Nintendo was better at controlling the budget of the new game.

I am not sure how much more they have spent on advertising, besides some hands-on meetings (which they usually do any way) and some dedicated Nintendo Directs which should be pretty cheap to produce also, the marketing is still not there.

I am confident that 1 million units will generate them a small profit, but most important for Nintendo is how many consoles it can help to sell to NEW customers, not the loyal fans which already have it or were planing to buy it anyway. That number I think it would be small but maybe interesting for them.

Nope. Sega as a whole profitted, but there is no mention of Bayonetta 2 as a contributing factor to that (Sonic at the Olympics is mentioned instead). Please provide a link stating they made money on the game.

Royalities are not that high, especially considering the lower price they sold at.

Where does the sentiment that Nintendo is better at controlling budgets whenever they're higher than they were for the games they made with Sega?

I hate to say it but I don't think it will hit even 500k LTD.

I'm not even sure if Hyrule Warriors will.

Who cares? i get to play it and its gonna be awesome.

Stating the obvious mate. It mainly because of the fucked up and over the top art direction that Bayonetta does not sell well. That and the fact that classic beat'em all have been destroyed and refreshed by Batman arkham's gameplay. It's seems almost impossible to go back now.

i don't have that link, but can you provide a link saying that the lost money on the game? All we can do is make some math and especulate... like lets assume that 1.2 million units were sold at full price for Bayo 1... out of those the publishers get around 36 U$ per copy, which mean the game made them 43 million, do you really think the budget of that game was higher than that?

Royalties are indeed high, usually between 9 and 12 U$ per copy, just check the image above. When a game price goes down the first to start losing their sahre are the stores, followed by the publishers, and when they produce a second or third batch the platform holders reduce their royalties but usually to half, that is why they are usually willing to lose money on the hardware so people can buy more software.

The part about better budget handling it just a hunch, based on the fact that they know the platform better than anyone else, and can provide technical support faster and cheaper to solve project problems.

Except Bayonetta isn't even a beat'em up.
