Forums - Gaming Discussion - After Watch Dogs, Titanfall, and Destiny, is 2014 the Year of Too Much Hype?

Mario Kart 8 lived up to it's hype the most out of every game that was hyped this year. Smash Bros. will live up to the hype as well, Hyrule Warriors won't live up to the hype at all. Destiny didn't live up to its hype.. Watch Dogs didn't.. Titanfall came close but not as close as Mario Kart 8. Assassins Creed Unity may not live up to its hype. This year was crazy

Hyrule Warriors hype?  Pretty sure the game just went from everyone in the universe though "WTF" when it was announced to slowly over time until release (in japan) of "wow that looks like they put good work in and I'm gonna get"

Hardly consider it as ever having hype.  Everyone knows behind all its smoke and mirrors of Zelda that it is still a Dynasty warriors game.

Why are people angry with ubisoft?^

I probably should have said disappointed. Reason is Watch Dogs, and a 'meh' E3 conference.

I've felt games have been overhyped for at least a few years now... surprised people are only just catching on now. That's not to say you still can't have some fun -- just need to lower your expectations.

didn't buy watch dogs, don't play xbox bought destiny and enjoying it,good fun co-op shooter

don't get the problems we are having,is it the units sold of each game which is ample or the meta scores,is it a problem for morons or just that they are not on nintendo, watchdogs will be on soon,

we really need to educate ourselves to get into the demos and try it really first. lower the expectations and just don't watch the trailers of cut scenes, there should be game play involved on those trailers and not 90% cut scenes from the game.

Every year is hype year. Some games live up to them and some don't. This year the three titles didn't live up to some people's expectations, but some of them probably had unrealistic expectations to begin with.

It's becoming the year of the hype, and I'm afraid it won't stop here at these games. I just hope this hype thing stops. I can't enjoy a game when they hype it to megaton levels, raise our expectations and disappoint us with a shell of what could have been. In fact, the games I've enjoyed the most were those that barely got hyped. They just need to release one trailer at E3, release date and that's it. Hyping a game for a year is never any good.

People don't seem to realize all the cautionary and demeaning articles before games come out and only see the positive ones then think it's all hype. I saw someone say The Order was being overhyped the other day when all I've seen is negative stuff on it. Sorry but commercials trying to sell the game =/= overhype. Destiny seemed to suffer from people thinking it would be something completely different structure wise. I expected semi-open worlds with some structured missions and of course the advertised raids and strikes. Also the PVP is excellent. I really don't get the trashing but reviewers seem to knock it down to 7/10 because they didn't like the story (which can only be properly judged after the 10 year cycle is complete).

More like the year of developers getting lazy on big AAA titles. There's been plenty of insanely hyped games the last decade or so of gaming, but the difference is most of them have been really good if not great games. The three in question here simply are not. They're just average quality games with way too much money and coverage thrown into them.
