While what he did was very long and I hope people like him gets punished and sent to jail for a very long time (if not for life)... Hes 93 loll. Hes gonna die soon anyway... I don't really see the point in charging someone so late in his life

Of course you don't see the point. Believe me though if you were there and saw the things he did to those people you would understand.

People tend to forget that many sympathizers of jews were also tortured and killed. Working in any military environment is no different. You follow orders or you're punished.

People in power can get away with things that people not in power can, this is even outside of the military. How often do you hear about celebrities using drugs on a regular basis. They're more important than you are, so they don't go to prison, but anyone else holding is going to get a year. Everyone is apologetic to celebrities though and they feel sorry for them and try to get them help. Other than them being known nationwide and having far more money than any of us, they're no different than the drug addicts you might know that have went to prison countless times.

If he was just a simple guard, what else could he have done but follow orders?

These days you could youtube it, but back then...I am not sure what could be done. Desert? Help in anyway you could? Not hide for your whole life?

But that is the nature of this sort of thing. There is going to be some collateral damage with crimes this Heinous. He is a casualty of it.

Yea Bradely Manning tried to do the right thing and he go thrown in solitary confinement. Imagine what hitler would have done? Well actually hitler probably would have executed him so it would be a lot more humane.

Imagine if the Israeli soldiers were charged with all the war crimes they commit... and that is going on right now. We should all focus on the present and leave the deaths of the 1940's behind. There are innocents in an inhumane and atrocious situation dying today because of Israel.

No we should focus on both.

Yep, people are stupid to want to charge a simple soldier. Nobody talks about this side of the story, the soldiers were forced to do that, it was a " you are with me or against me " politic and when you have the choice of protecting your life and the life of your family, you do the logic choice.

The only thing that could be punished is unnecessary violence from some SS guards for pleasure

You're right but you also have to remember that with this logic, NOBODY is at fault for what happened. EVERY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL below Hitler in the 3rd Reich was just following orders.

They could've easily overthrew Hitler BUT THEY DIDN'T! They LOVED what was happening. Hitler strategically boiled the racism to an outragous point in those days so it made it easier for people to justify doing this to other people. They weren't just helpless soldiers. They knew wtf they were doing.. well.. most of them

There was an attempted coop agAinst Hitler that included some of the most powerful people in Germany like General Rommel-  It failed and they were executed

I would agree with you if there were physical  evidence of the existence of gas chambers. Unfortunately, they were all destroyed and the one that remains in Auschwitz used to be morgue that was rebuilt after the war by the Soviets to be a what a gas chamber looked like according to the jews.

My point is that this 93 year old guard should be left alone since there is no physical proof he could have participated in the gassing of so many jews.

Even though absolutely horrifying things happenned, holding a guard responsible is just stupid...
Almost as much as saying "But he didn't do anything" !

Guess what happenned to the ones who did something. Guess what happenned to their families.
Blaming a man who followed orders (especially if he wasn't directly involved in anything) isn't the smartest thing.

But well, I guess they needed someone to be punished so...

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

I do not oppose any German being put on trail for crime against humanity for actions during the Second World War, but I think some Russians, Americans and other Allied solders who committed crimes should also be tried. It is not enough to merely accept crimes are committed by all sides during war, everyone should be accountable for their actions (even if they are on the winning side).

For the Americans who read this I would like to remind them of Wounded Knee, the countless reprisals of Malmedy, No Gun Ri, and above all My Lai. The main different between war heroes and criminals, is whether or not they are on the winning side.

The winning side of any war gets away with literally anything. Unfortunately that is how it is

What ...

No.  You don't easily topple a military regime.  The Gestapo was a powerful and extensive secret police network that kept the whole country in fear.  People were executed simply for questioning the government.  You could end up in the torture chamber for nothing more than a stray negative comment.  And you know what else?  Your entire family could, as well.

But he said he is the king of WW2 history so he knows better!!

Anybody going on like all Germans back then wanted it and deserve to be punished aren't any better than Nazis who killed Jews just because they were Jews. Just like all of the world's leaders are rightfully elected and respected and followed by 100% of their nation... right.

And of course, facebook and twitter were allround before 1930 so everybody should have known about the secrets before it escalated into a WW just like we all knew about the internet spying way before 2000... right. (well, some did but nobody listened lol)

*In 2005, he told Der Spiegel magazine he recalled one incident on "ramp duty" when he heard a baby crying. "I saw another SS soldier grab the baby by the legs..." he said. "He smashed the baby's head against the iron side of a truck until it was silent."*

Argh sick.
