Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

So Activision and Take two next?

In all seriously it seems like a pretty bad deal to me but who knows what they have planned for the minecraft IP. Really don't think it'll have much of an effect on the xbox but more so with windows and tablets.

I literally just bought Minecraft PS4 just incase they pulled it when the deal is announced

Im really curious to see where they take the IP in the future.

If they wanted to pull Minecraft on PS4/3 tuesday, I'm sure they could. Depends on the deal MS make with Mojang but effectively, what can Sony do?

We've certainly had games taken down before due to buyouts (Midway, THQ ect).

Playstation will not be a huge driver of Minecraft sales imo, so they should pull it and advertise it as XB1/360/PC/Mobile exclusive.

PS3 version has been legging quite well, and with the PS4 being the market leader by quite a distance, Minecraft will naturally have great legs on the platform.

Minecraft sells to the mass market. PS4 is the current mass market console of choice. Game would do great for MS profit-wise, if kept on PS platforms.

The main question is though, will they make it MS exclusive going forward? Part of the appeal with Minecraft, one of the reasons it is the best selling game ever, is because its available on every viable platform. To stop that would be a huge hit to the franchise IMO.

Disagree, PC and 360 alone it was doing huge numbers, then mobile helped it grow even bigger. I don't think PS3/PS4/XB1 ect are really making a dent right now.

I agree with your sentiments, I just think MS can afford to make it Xbox exclusive.

I hardly doubt that MS will pull it from any platform. It sells like crazy and pulling it from any platform would mean a loss since it's already on there.
That's like buying Rovio and pulling Angry Birds from iOS.

so they will make the most profits from digital on ps4

and get hardware sale boosts by pysical copys on xb1

Do you, or anyone else, think that Minecraft actually sells systems?

To me, it seems the other way around.

It's not: "OMG, Minecraft is coming out on PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, gotta buy the console!!!"

But: "Hey, I already got a PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, now that Minecraft is out, I'll get the game!"

every game sell systems to an extend

and why should a 12m+ game on xb360 not sell systems?

ofc it does.

it just not sell systems like some other AAA blockbusters do (giving nice sales bumps) but it increase the baseline and u get more people want ur console

All that money and you do this, disappointing MS. Surely a better investment could have been found to splash the cash on?

Why would you buy Mojang for so much money?
They could have bought someone much better, but instead they decide to go for the one hit wonder Mojang!
Well it's not my money...

Not really, MS will clearly spend what they want to and it isn't a case of "this or that". It already says in the link, this isn't for Xbox it's for Mobile.

Yeah, you arer right. Makes me even happier, because they are clearly focused on mobile (as their mission statement says anyway), but still this means $2.5 billion less available for XBox.

And that makes me very happy, because I would hate to lose ability to play my favorite games.

A long shot, but my ultimate hope is that they continue moneyhatting mobile, and that the money for it comes from the sale and/or shutdown of the XBox division.

It'll never be shutdown, spin-off or sold to someone else is the only option there. Which overall I wouldn't mind because Xbox would still exist just under another company.

I wish they would just announce every XBO owner would get hardware upgrades for free and that they will sell XBo consoles for 199 each until they reached the 2.5bn limit.

Seems less of a waste of money than buying an overated game that just is popular because of the community that worked for free. The game itself was a java mess with bad performance for what it was and an ignorant "I rip off ideas" "developer".

And buying a studio that just made a 1hit wonder seems even more stupid. The real MC community is on PC anyway.

I wish, if they can pay 2.5 billion for Minecraft they could surely afford Take-Two for 3 or 4 billion. Sadly it won't happen anytime soon now since they decided to buy Minecraft instead.
