I wonder how much cash there is in the company (Mojang).

According to a 2013-12 financial snapshot

Assets (TKR) 1,454,663
Liabilities (TKR) 638,564
Equity (TKR) 816,099

816,099 TKR = ~115 Million USD with today's currency exchange rate.

So he stands to make 1.75 billion. For himself.

Funny, he tweeted about Windows 8 once that he'd release Minecraft on it only for 2 billion dollars. Apparently 1.75 billion is close enough. Fucking sellout.

I bet it's different when there is a $1.75b check on the table with your name on it.

Damn, that's a lot of money. Now I'm interested in seeing what they do with it.

What who does with it? Mojang? Mojang will do what Microsoft tells them to do, which will be to make the next Minecraft. Notch is the one that gets the $2.5 billion, and he won't be using it to make games, because he no longer owns a game company.

Wait, so correct me if I am wrong... could he just not start up a new company?

I didn't even get a chance to buy Minecraft on PS4. What now?

It's definitely a win for Windows Phone.

tbh if it was coming to vita, it would have come to windows phone anyway. Even if it wasnt, 2.5bn still isnt worth it.

No, you don't understand. Microsoft has just made Windows Phone the place to one of the most popular mobile games ever. Not only that, but they have secured a game that has ingrained itself on nine different platforms. That in itself is a boon, and the influence that comes with it is certainly worth a lot of money. Whether or not it is $2.5 billion worth of money is yet to be seen.

I don't get it because I don't play Minecraft so this seems like a joke. This is not a system seller surely. Isn't Mojang a 50 person company?

48 iirc

I think I counted 40 people within the company with the 3 founders playing a double role. - source

If they were to spend that amount of money on it, then stop selling it on Ps3/4/vita I think they'd never see a return on it, Minecraft has value because you can buy it on almost all platforms now and each one pumps money in, if you limit the platforms you stop the flow, people wont buy a system to play minecraft, simple as that.

If they wanted to pull Minecraft on PS4/3 tuesday, I'm sure they could. Depends on the deal MS make with Mojang but effectively, what can Sony do?

The question is also, what can MS do exactly?

I'm no lawyer, and I don't know the details of the contractual obligations between Mojang and Sony, but I'm pretty sure they're not nullified because of a change of ownership.

To me it would seem like an oddly extreme thing to do to force MineCraft into XBox exclusivity overnight like that. And what about iOS and Android? Pull those too? One of the things that makes MineCraft huge is that it's available everywhere and that it makes huge amounts of money everywhere.

MS paying 2.5B for it and then drastically cutting its ongoing revenue (and in effect again making them look anti-consumer in the media) doesn't make much sense to me. I figure MS has probably a more long term, more sensible vision for MineCraft.

Microsoft can still spend $2.5 billion on new games. Some time ago they already said they're spending a billion on X1 exclusives. Also, there isn't always a guarantee a new IP will be good even from an established studio. Have you heard about Destiny?

A billion, so they could of spent 3.5 billion on games? jesus.

It's a thing called experimentation, how else do you think we got games like minecraft, halo, final fantasy. New IPs is always great for the gaming industry, instead of repeating the same old thing until there's not a thing left of it. Destiny was an experiment, now they can try new things, or improve on it.

Destiny is the epitome of "repeating the same old thing." Yet its one of the best selling new IPs ever.

We've seen more innovation in old IPs getting sequels.

This could end poorly for MS. And if it does... so what?

MS still has plenty of money. Its not like they're betting everything on Mojang.

Xbox One is still getting noteworthy regardless of what happens. I'm just curious to see what the plans with Mojang are for them to even consider buying it for that much.

If it does it was a terrible way to spend money they could have spent on, for example, 20+ other games. People can't criticize their decisions because they're swimming in money?

They will put out 20+ games over the generation.

Relax, there will still be other games.
