Forums - Microsoft Discussion - If Microsoft bought Mojang, would they ruin it like they did with RARE?

rare had a lot of games, mojang has minecraft and...?

there is nothing to ruin there. once minecraft popularity fades mojang is done

Unlike RARE, Mojang only has one IP and its a game with user generated content.

There is just no way to mess that up. Even if they layed off everyone at mojang, they could still run the game without any problems.

Let's be realistic. Minecraft is a good seller, but it won't give the kind of profit that a company like MS expects. So, it isn't because of the profit. They want the IP. The company is small and only has 1 IP so buying the franchise or the company would cost the same, so they bought the company. What will happen can be:
- Minecraft development will stop in some platforms. PS and Nintendo out, iOS PC, and Android maybe. Game will be basically XB exclusive.
- Minecraft will continue in all platforms. But XB version will receive exclusive/timed exclusive content and expansions.
- Minecraft will stay as it is. But they will do a much improved Minecraft 2 and release only on XB.

Everyone expecting that the game will still be the same is being delusional.

I don't think MS will fucked up mojang like they did with rare because Mojang is not like rare.

Rare was a god-like studio back in the 90s.

Mojang is a one hit wonder studio.

It's kinda obvious. All their divisions return massive profits so thinking they bought Mojang interested on their financials is a bit naive. Look at Rare, they were just interested in a bag of IPs and (in that case) good dev power. And even with a perfect dev company they decided to change everything and destroyed one of the best developers of the 90s.

MS never ruined Rare, all of Rare's talent left before MS bought them. It's the reason Nintendo didn't want to keep them.

With that clarified, I don't know how MS could ruin a company that made one game. The game itself is mostly a sandbox of tools that users use to make their own fun. It's not like Minecraft has great graphics, music or story. It's just a great initial concept. I would expect MS to make Minecraft 2 with perhaps better graphics and more tools, etc, and possibly make a bunch of money off it.

No, the founders of Rare quit in 2007 and all the other good/original people at Rare were fired and the rest quit in 2010 and 2012. MS bought them YEARS before that in 2002.

I don't think Microsoft ruined Rare. All the key people had left by the time they purchased the company. Microsoft just bought the remains--it was already ruined.

In regards to Minecraft, it was always a poorly managed product. Microsoft's ownership comes with more hope than reservations.

I hope Microsoft dosen’t waste Mojang’s talent, or ruin what makes them special. It can happen, but it’s pretty Rare.
