Forums - Gaming Discussion - How would you make a game with a $500 million budget?

Everyone talking about how you "just wouldn't spend that much on the game," you're missing the entire point of the thread.

I would probably make some RPG adventure game. I'd spend a lot of time making it really fun and polished yet not super graphically amazing or anything, then spend the rest of the money on making it the hugest game ever. Make it so huge that it takes a ridiculous amount of time to see everything. Any hole in the ground can lead to a mile-long system of tunnels. Any random NPC if interacted with in the right way could lead you on a crazy epic quest that you couldn't have seen coming, which leads to even more quests and secret areas. Just a ton of content everywhere you turn.

A game that's so big with so much to explore it actually feels like an adventure, with just so much content it can't really get spoiled or easily compiled into a strategy guide. Where even as adults we're constantly surprised by what we're finding and sharing our experiences with each other like we did when we were kids.

THAT'S what I would make if I had stupid amounts of money. These days it seems like graphics are always a big priority that suck up all the resources. Then more modest games just don't have the budget to develop that much content Give me a graphically modest game with craploads of content.

Assuming I do not have to care about market realities, I would make a JRPG with massive scale and cutting edge visuals. Battle system would be Grandia II (because Square Enix sure isn't doing anything with it!) based and could have couch co-op where character control be split how ever P1 and P2 wanted. Be able to have tons of side quests and new game + and hidden super dungeons.

Story would be darker with more nuanced characters and seeing various factions and threads woven together as you play across different parties. The musical score would have to be full orchestra with plenty of epic movements in the score. Character design would be bold and distinctive with some classic JRPG clothing choices.

So, I would be so happy and my company would probably go brankrupt.

Trust me. If the game sells and gains interest from the hardcore and casual JRPG fans, the company won't go bankrupt.

Would never spend that much on a game. Easy bankrupt.

I am not a game designer and do not pretend to be. I am a consumer of the hobby.  While I work for one of the largest software companies on earth, I am not qualified to answer your question.

Amen!

Dem DOOM comic!!!

Just spend 480 million on marketing....

Destiny will not be remembered as a great game but as the game that had GREAT marketing....

I would print discs with nothing on it, sell them for $50 and buy 10 million copies myself.

Any racing game could easily use that money buying licences for every single manufacturer in the world, and hiring enough developers to recreate all of the cars digitally.

$500 million for me would bring upon the second coming of the JRPG.

An epic project with the quality and polished love of Ni no Kuni, The Last of Us,and Xenoblade Chronicles and with a story with the depth and scope of the likes not attempted since Xenogears.

Now THIS is a game that would bring consoles back to Japan.

I would make literally the biggest game ever.
