Could MS jumpstart the 9th gen to restart the race in 2017 basically writing off the XB1 as a failure?

Go back and look at the titles that launched in the first year for the PS2 and OG Xbox...they weren't that great even back then...in quality or quantity.  The first year of a console's life is ALWAYS a bit lean.  It takes TIME to develop a good game, and more time to get used to the tools and the systems the devs are making the games for!

I think this generation will be as long as the last and i hope so too as the first year has been disappointing. Another 7 years would be good.

so 2019-21 with Nintendo launching first. 3DS successor in 2018. Vita won't get a successor.

Of course not, because 2017 MS will release the "infinitive Power of the cloud" for the XBone. ^,^

Nintendo is no more participating in this "horse power race" since the Wii back in 2006.
They do their own thing and that is ok.

PS needs to be in for the next gen to start. It kinda depends on Sony's decision. 2017 is too close.

Now this is a more realistic prediction. People who think this will be a 5 year gen are in for a surprise. Also, i dont think Microsoft will rush a new gen, their efforts atm seem to be towards quickly rescuing the X1 with their wallet(tomb raider, majong). If that doesnt work, i really dont see them sinking more money in a new system. They will probably sell off or close the division.

Nintendo also wont rush into anything now that they are making the first strides into HD gaming.

I personally think that Nintendo will have to make this gen as short as possible. Six years, tops. So, they'll kick off the "new generation" by releasing cheap hardware slightly more powerful than the PS4.

Here's the thing. New processor developments are starting to center around efficiency in terms of power, so raw power isn't as much of a focus now.

I personally expect them to announce the Wii U successor in Q1 2018, and release it Q4 2018. 3DS successor released a year before.

My guess is this. The next nintendo console will launch 2015 or 2016, The next xbox will launch 2017 or 18, and the ps5 will launch 18 or 19.

If MS were to release a new console in 2017 with backwards compatibility and a nice trade in value for XB1's then I think it would be good. But so much money would have been wasted on the XB1.
