Forums - Gaming Discussion - 9th Gen in 2017?

Could MS jumpstart the 9th gen to restart the race in 2017 basically writing off the XB1 as a failure?

Yes 50 20.58%

No 101 41.56%

Nintendo will do it first 92 37.86%

However, this doesn't seem to be what is going to happen. As it stands we could be seeing another 6th gen like market share split this gen. With the PS4 being at say 100M and the wiiU and XB1 being at under 35-40M respectively.

6th gen was 150Mil versus 21-24 Mil.  Wii U is heading below that so far, and XB1 still unknown.

Yes I think that Nintendo and Microsoft will be pressured to release a new console early.   Nintendo will need to release sooner.  Low selling consoles don't have legs.

Take a look at this

Many reasons apply to 2017 just as good.

There seems to be talk about MS selling the XBOX divsion.
This would be the opposite.
Console and game development has to start this year already, latest early next year, for a 2017 launch.
So that would mean MS is already focused on their next console and will be sending out devkits to activision ea ubisoft capcom sega and square enix in the coming months.

You think those companies want that?
Of course not. No one has time to work on games for a next xbox coming in 2017. Including MS.

It's fast, but it's been done before.  Xbox 360 was introduced just 4 years after the original Xbox.

They would send early devkits about 2 years before launch, so around end of 2015 for a 2017 launch.

2017 seems a bit early if you ask me! For Sony and MS at least... :S

Yes and I can't believe that there are people who think this gen will last longer than the previous PS360Wii gen.

No way they waste their years of R&D so fast, but 2018 is a possibilty.

Add me if u want :)

2016 or 2017 is likely, but I think Nintendo will release first.

WiiU is not getting anywhere near 60m ...

Other than that, I forsee this gen ending sooner than the last one did.

The OP never thought it was getting near 60m. That was a hypothetical situation.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

Let's hope not. Longer gens make consoles more worth it

and the games crappier and more boring and everything will look the same and the consumers feel fatigue and also PC hardware gets affected because noone needs to upgrade which results in less innovations in hardware and 10% boosts per PC-hardware-generation instead of 30+% boosts or whatever and as a result the next consoles will again be underpowered (compared to what could have been without the artificial slowdown that was caused by PS360 and noone upgrading hardware on PC etc)

Keep the consoles for 5 years and then kill them.

Nothing you have said has anything to do with better upgraded hardware.

You seem to be of the school of thought that more power = more variety in game design and art.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

Congratulations on focusing on the part (bold) that helps your argument

The games get crappier because devs  focus on wasting millions in upgrading visuals and squeezing 1 more effect 1 more polygon etc out of the games. Instead of making games better. If you give them better hardware they can make PS3 visuals on PS4 with almost no effort. (I am obviously NOT talking  about indies)

The hardware part is 100% correct innovations even start to skip desktops (intel  considers bringing new hardware to destops every 2 years now instead of every year. Laptops will still get new stuff every year) and since the PC tech was crap for a long time PS4 and XBO had to chose between underpowered PC hardware or even more underpowered PC hardare (compared to how the hardware could be if the last gen would not have lasted so long)

so much for your "Nothing you have said has anything to do with better upgraded hardware. "  btw what do you mean with "better upgraded"?

feels like this gen is slow.... maybe it would last 7 years again....

i remember udring 6th gen theres great games release every week

Go back and look at the titles that launched in the first year for the PS2 and OG Xbox...they weren't that great even back then...in quality or quantity.  The first year of a console's life is ALWAYS a bit lean.  It takes TIME to develop a good game, and more time to get used to the tools and the systems the devs are making the games for!
