I just watched a Youtube video by Rich from ReviewTechUSA where he almost &#$@ himself because apparently today's teens can't play NES games very well. That's pretty dumb, but when you look at the comments...

Today's games hold your hand all the time!
Today's games are too easy!
Finishing a game used to mean something!
Today's gamers suck at gaming!
Mainstream games are made for toddlers!

...reminds me of my grandpa talking about how I dress or talk.

(I started gaming in 1996, so I'm not a complete newb either, but I don't look down on younger gamers for not enjoying the games I used to play back then, because I realize that's just nostalgia value and these game suck compared to today's games...)

I've been gaming since i was like 5 (SNES super mario world among other's) i was 5 years old. I look at it this way game's are better nowaday's but in a different way. Most game's back then didn't have flashy graphics so the gameplay was highly emphasized, today it's the complete opposite most "hardcore gamer's are all about flashy graphic's." The games back in the day were a lot harder and you really had to be dedicated to beat those game's so a thing of pride goes into it. Also people who try to go back and play the older games generally give up relatively soon after playing because of progression issues brought on by the difficulty it's not so much that the games get boring it's the fact that were so spoiled with game's nowaday's being able to pick a game up and in 15 minutes your playing like a pro and advancing through the game at a very nice pace. Now don;t get me wrong i love the fact the developer's are making games this way but at the same time older nostalgic player's are almost a little jealous because they remember back in the day dedicating so much time and effort into a game to master it and it seem's to them that nowaday game's almost pat you on the back and congratulate you just for playing it. But i love all games and have played from 16 bit through today and all them are great in their own way, just it's just preference. So if you ever here stuff like this again look at it this way they envy the fact that we get to grow up into an era of great gaming that makes you feel good about playing even if you aren't the master at it and still give's you the opportunity to beat it. P.S. play hard, expert etc. mode if you want to get yourself that proverbial pat on the back old school gamer's.

1. Quality wise many old games are still superior.
2. Control wise they are inferior especially early 3D games (MGS2 HD felt like $hit when I tried to play in PS3).

If you think those typical comments you quoted about games today being too easy compared to the games of yester year are a bunch of BS, then just watch as the Millennial generation (ages 15-19 in the video) attempt to play Super Mario Bros on the original NES for the first time...

For reference, I was 5 years old the first time I ever played SMB, and I did just about as well as they do in the video.

I am from the old generation and I cannot play NES games either.
Heck, I could not play them back in the day, they were so hard...

I've been a gamer for almost 30 years and I disagree that today's games are easy.  Many old games used to be so simple that they could be completely mastered from start to finish. Today's games are usually complex, open ended, and difficult to master.

Let's not confuse bad controls with good difficulty. An example is NSMBU which is a challenging game due to classic controls which are restrictive and sloppy.  They're not intuitive for someone new to the game, so it's not surprising those teens had a hard time playing SMB for the first time.

Lol i have been a gamer atari era but i never dictacted younger gen for anything. As a teen ppl keep call me a nerd or a weird im fine with that. I feel glad for younger gen right now, they can playing a game anytime anywhere they want. You are so lucky bastard, but we are way more lucky can play most of it Nes Snes PS Genesis. What we make me a bit angry is teen reaction when they touch or played our childhood memory with a weird expression. Thats it.

I am part of the older generation and I enjoy anyone getting into games no matter the age. But I get upset when I hear any gamer speak as if older games are too archaic to be any fun and should stay in the past. In that video linked a lot of the teens were having fun playing but they still made it seem as if the NES is irrelevant now.

I have the same problem with any "retro gamer" who also thinks any thing before the NES is unplayable and some who even think the NES is unplayable but never gave them a chance and put current day expectations towards them.

To be honest most older adults hostility comes from jealousy and  trying to justify their way of life. Just like my parents were mad at me because I didn't like to get up at 5:30 am to catch the bus. They would go on and on about how much harder they had it as if that was a good thing. We should all be glad that our kids don't have to have the same hardships as we did because they have plenty of their own we never had to deal with.

But when I see the younger generation smiling when they play an older game it really makes me happy. I don't expect the younger generation to know about video gaming's past but don't knock it before you try it, you could be missing out on a lot of fun. Just like those who dismiss new games without any first hand knowledge. 

I've been playing video games since the 5th gen (PS1) and I can't even go back and play any of the games on there. Almost all of them are dated and didn't age well at all (of course this is to be expected from games made in the 90's) Anyway games today are far better than anything in the 90's.

That's kinda obvious, they have almost the same experience on gaming as you when you had 5 years old. Not weird at all since neither of them are really gamers
