Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's road to getting (a proper) Monster Hunter back to its console(s)

We are coming up on some anniversities.

Next month will mark the seven year anniversity of Capcom announcing the switch from PS3 to Wii for Monster Hunter Tri and this week marks the 3 year anniversity of Nintendo's deal to offer Monster Hunter Tri and 4 (and 4G) exclusive to its handheld.  Both events were considered big blows to Sony in Japan where the game was a staple on the PS2 and PSP.  You only have to do a search here at vgchartz to get some interesting prespectives on how the two events unfolded.

Fast forward to today and it seems that, at least in the past seven years, Sony is in a somewhat good position to get Monster Hunter back to at least one of its consoles (Home).  Recently Sony announced a new Dragon Quest musou game that, while not a main line DQ game, does represent a return of the series after close to a 10 year absense.  Whatever Sony did to get that game greenl ighted they need to do with Monster Hunter.  It doesn't have to be main line game but a game to transition the fans back to Playstation.

While the Japanese market has been extremely soft for consoles sales this generation, western sales have been on fire and this is where Sony can leverage their ability to get a game.

Sony's road to get the game back will be without its difficulties and preconceptions, What other ideas can Sony throw to get the franchise back?

Buy Capcom before Nintendo does.

More seriously, I think they'd need to convince Capcom that the only way Monster Hunter is ever going to catch on in a big way in the west is on a home console. Something like that Tencent Monster Hunter MMO could be the ticket.

Deep Down is Sony's response for the lost of the MH franchise.

And I thought they had MH frontier online on PS3/Vita (Wii U too)

Without a properly supported handheld, there's no way. Monster Hunter did/does best as a handheld game in the Japenese market. The support outside of Japan is relatively secondary, and in Japan the PS4 is doing piss poor currently.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

I feel that Deep Down now and Dragon's Dogma before are Capcom's way of saying "my bad, here is an somewhat equvelant hunter game you can have" but the odd thing is that both represent events as to why they stopped development on the PS3 version of Tri.  Im sure if Capcom made a somewhat big budget Monster Hunter game (at least with the budget of Dragon's) they would have sold more and made more than that game.  Maybe the PS4 represents their chance to roll the dice again?

Well, I think the ps4 has the best chance at getting MH for the consoles than anyone else, thats for sure although they will have to wait a bit till it sells a lot more units in Japan cause MH isn't really that popular outside of Japan. Either that or just bring in piles of money

It's actually really quite easy. Turn up at Capcom HQ with a bigger pile of money to what Nintendo bring.

If it was that easy we all should be playing a proper Monster Hunter on Xbox systems by now.

I think western expansion will be the key as well (maybe a multiplat with Xbox One), not saying Nintendo did a bad job with the expansion while the series has been on its consoles but its still niche for such a large Japanese IP and something I feel Capcom really wants to change.  With the deterioration of the Japanese market, the company (and all Japanese gaming companies) can't rely on just that market alone.

Monsrer hunter on PS4 would give PS4 a big sales boost on japan, aside from that i always wanted to play MH on PS2 and i never could (i never found a copy back then), so a MH on PS4 would be for me a dream come true.
