Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bungie Warns Destiny Day-One Reviews Might Not Tell the Whole Story

With the Destiny launch just around the corner, you might be eager to read the first reviews as soon as they're published, but Bungie warns that these might not serve as the best appraisals of its "shared-world" first-person shooter.

According to Bungie community manager David "Deej" Dague, Destiny isn't a typical shooter. You could play through the story and some competitive multiplayer matches without too much interaction, but the best way to experience it is when the world is fully populated, with many players roaming about. Dague said that Bungie considered populating the game somehow for reviewers before the game's release, but decided that nothing was a suitable substitute to the live, public version of the game.

"We fully anticipate seeing day one reviews from folks who decide to kick the tires, but don’t have the time or patience to take our ride for a nice, long road trip," Dague said in the most recent Bungie Weekly Update. "Some of you might wait to pick up a copy until you read the final verdict from your most trusted review house. We’re okay with that. We’ve created something we’re proud of."

Dague also said that Destiny "really begins" at the level cap of 20, which is something you often hear about massively multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft. At that point, you can keep improving your Guardian by getting better gear and taking on the endgame raids with your friends. In fact, Dague recently said that you're not likely to "finish" the game anytime soon, if you ever do.

You can pre-load Destiny now before it launches on Tuesday, September 9 for Xbox 360, Xbox OnePlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

dun dun dunnnnnn... expect mixed reviews for destiny!

The only time I see this being said is with MMOs when a reviewer or players say: "Did everything, that was it? Boring."

Destiny will be the biggest selling game ever, Glad I'm getting it on the best system there is, PS4 baby all day

That's fair. I mean, if someone said, "I played 20 hours of WoW, here is a review," it would meet with general amusement from anyone who's played for any significant length of time.

That doesn't sound good :S

And seeing as those endgame raids are locked unless you happen to have a bunch of friends online willing to play Destiny at that exact moment (hint: most people don't), you really won't be able to appreciate the "long-run" that they want you to experience.

That being said, I'm still buying the game, because it looks fun for me. I could care less about reviews.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

This is of course because they claim they delayed shipment of review copies so that reviewers would have to play alongside random, real world gamers. Of course, they also put no way for them to talk to each other into the game, and don't allow them to team up for the raid type content, but whatever.

As if they cannot just open the servers up for reviewers and allow them to play together.

What? No poor AI cannon fodder?

Seriously, though, this definitely seems like a game a reviewer should spend at least a few days with after launch, when there is many more people playing, before releasing a review. Of course, then they would miss out on hits when others release their review right away. And we can't have that, now can we?

I could honestly care less what it reviews. I played the Alpha and Beta, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting.

Even WoW reviews were high from the beginning though. It received acclaim from basically all gaming magazine and websites. I don't ever remember reading about WoW getting anything lower than a 9 out of 10, or lower than a 90%.

You can even check in Wikipedia in this link. Just go to reception section.

Doesn't sound good is right. This just goes to show you the power of hype. If this game is anything short of spectacular, it would be a huge disappointment. I'm sure the PS4 hype crowd would still eat it up however, since their only about 2 to 5 games really worth getting on the system.
