Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pachter: "There is no place for Nintendo hardware". Thoughts?

Bold: Was it though? NGC had better hardware overall than PS2, which always led me to think it was more expensive to make. 2nd, they dropped the price to 99 at some point, and most of its life I remember being cheaper than PS2 as well. So there you have it: more expensive hardware+cheaper console=less revenues me thinks. Maybe it managed to be profitable considering the standards Nintendo saw for it, but not profitable compared with PS2 (I don't trust that lazy chart around the web btw, it says little and the little it says hasn't been confirmed).

Underlined: definitely higher than PS2 exclusives, but still lower when compared with overall SW retention.

The NGC sold at a profit and had high software rates. The WiiU and 3DS are the only hardware Nintendo has, seemingly, ever sold at a loss and doing it both at the same time really gutted them.

As to the relation between it and the PS2, like I said, its next to impossible to disentangle the GBA and NGC profits, so we have no idea how they line up exactly in the home console department.

I think he is an idiot. If there isn't room for any console it would Xb1 since it is just to similar to PS4 while PS4 is better

The PS2 only lost money in its launch year (about $450m), it made about $2.6 billion in the following 4. Nintendo did make more overall profit that gen ($4.8b in the same 5 years for the GC and GBA), but the PS2 was without a doubt considerable more profitable than the GC. Unless you want to imply that that the GC made a similar amount of profit to the GBA? (22m vs 81.5m for hardware and 210m vs 370m for software).

Profitability alone isn't a sign of success though. A company doesn't dedicate years of its time and resources in the hopes of making a small profit and losing market share, especially when that product represents a major portion of their business. The GC could certainly have done worse (as shown by the WiiU's current situation), but for a company as profitable as Nintendo it was without a doubt a failure.

Yes, I looked it up later as other corrected me.

As for the WiiU, it wasn't helped by the 3DS coming out at a loss as well as the WiiU. The 3DS because of its 3D tech, the WiiU because of its gamepad technologies (which are still top of the line even today). Both of them coming in at once has really damaged the bottomline but, as of a few months ago, the WiiU has become positive on sale and the 3DS has been positive for a long time now. As to whether or not the NGC is to be considered a failure, that depends on a lot of thing but, yes, they were "losing" in more senses than just profit. They had been losing marketshare and consoles sold since the SNES.

You know nothing Pachter...

So Japan where they are the hardware leader doesn't actually exist?

There's no place for threads about fake analysts like Pachturd.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

This guy's opinions should be met with total indifference. What makes his opinions more important than anybody elses? People seem to be starting discussions on forums if he is just scratching his ass or picking his nose. He must feel like a god.

its pretty dumb to say there is no place for Nintendo hardware when Nintendo hardware has sold over 50 million so far this generation and by the end will be in the 80-100 million range.

Hmmm while I agree to a point, overall I don't think Nintendo becoming software only company is a good idea.We should wait to see if the next Nintendo console will flop like the Wii U.

How does one define "flop" anyway? If The Wii-U becomes profitable, is it really a flop?

It is in Patchers' interest that Nintendo fails, since his stock advice will then have paid of for Wedbush or whoever's clients. Always keep that in mind when indulging in his insights.

It wouldn't just be in his best interest though

What do you mean? That it's also not in his best interest if Nintendo fails? Or there are other entities that would also benefit from Nintendo failing? No matter what you are driving at it has no relation to the point I am making which is this: Patcher has a monetary interest in Nintendo stock going down. He is being paid by people to give opinions on stock, if he is right, people make money of his advice and will keep paying him for his advice. If he is wrong, people will lose money and after a while he will be out of a job. So, when Patcher rags on Nintendo with semingly nonsensical analysis he is doing it not to get a rise out of people on VGChartz, he is doing it to discourage people from buying the platform and more importantly, spread FUD amongst investors about Nintendo to keep the stock stagnant or moving down.

If you understand this fact, you understand Patcher and why he keeps hammering the same points even though he is often very wrong.
