Console gaming is dead in Japan. Only the WiiU sputters by, but honestly the U numbers are STILL horrible. The VITA, yes the lowly Vita, blows the WiiU numbers away, and the Vita of course is utterly crushed by 3DS sales. WiiU is a SUPER distant 3rd place in the overall market. PS4 will never get big in Japan, U will sputter for a little while longer and die out, XB1 will die on release basically.

It's a mobile country now, AND one that is rapidly aging. Gaming will be dead in Japan even on mobile in a few gens.

You didn't include the PS1 and the PS2 but I'd image they did a whole lot better anyway.

Well, I knew it was bad but not that it was that bad. WiiU isn't exactly doing much better. I think PS4 will turn it around a bit though. It won't end up in the top of course, but it will at least beat consoles like the Saturn, the Dreamcast and the WiiU. In any case, home-console gaming in Japan is probably sadly beyond repair.

In your list , PS4 is the only console that had absolutely 0 exclusives released or announced for Japan and no holiday at the same time.

So these sales are understandable and even normal in such context, it's not a relevant comparison at all, ( even without the fact we are in a generation where Japan isnt as strong as it was during PS2 era. )

But with first holiday and games coming, it will be better, much better.

I'm willing to bet there was SOME GAME(s) that had recently released and were selling really good still.

From release until September, the N64 had no games on it asside from its launch line up:
