Forums - Sales Discussion - So, PS4 is Selling on Hype? So what? Doesn't Every Generation Winner Sell on Hype?

It is hype and because both nintendo and Microsoft messed up on their consoles as well. Nintendo chose to release a console with a tablet as its main attraction and come out less powerful than its competition. Without the casual croud going crazy for it, it did not perform as well as the Wii.

Microsoft fucked up so hard, i don't think it needs to be brought up again.
They paved the way for the PS4 to take the lead once more.

PS4 totally does not deserve its sales. Personally, there is nothing that I like about the console. I even wish it hadn't existed.

But let's get real, let's see how Sony gets away with its ''consoles''. (Mods do not ban me again because I do not like Sony).

1. Sony uses EXTREMELY aggressive marketing and promotion. Even like the most poor kid living in the most remote area knows about PS. (About the kid is just an example, of course I do not discriminate against anyone!!!)

2. Sony ALWAYS uses gimmicks and tricks but ''gamers'' always fall for them and applaud them as well.
-PS1 succeded only because it had CDs. I still remember that all of my friends that had PS1 came to my house to play N64 admitting N64 was a better system due to 3D fact (SM64).
-PS2 had the DVD player incorporated. If ''gamers'' are happy about PS2 sales, they must be happy when lots of people just bought PS2 because back then a DVD player was the same or even more expensive than a normal DVD player. This is how PS2 got its sales making the competition suffer. I have never been more disgusted by a move from a gaming company.
-PS3 has blu-ray. Surprisingly, it did not work this time. Nobody was or is (very) interested in Blu-Ray. I mean, come on. A blu-ray costs like 60 dollars in Australia or 40 euros in Europe!!!

3. Sony pays stores to have lots of space with consoles, games and accessories. I know that because I used to work for Media Markt one year. Not to mention, sales people are forced to promote PS.

4. Sony prides itself about having top-notch technology all the time. OMG! Give us a break!

I am not here to judge or something but these are facts, I myself am a console collector, so I own all consoles including PS4.

I know for a fact that number 3 isn't true...so we'll skip that.

You talk about all of Sony's gimmicks and then go on to talk about Discs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. All three of those went on to become the standard for consoles after Sony did it. You also talked about Sony not having up to date tech after talking about three game changing inovations in physical media that they helped push into gaming.

Your post made no sense dude...

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

The rest of the post is pretty bad, but these contradict themselves. In regards to "facts" - most of what you posted was anything but those.

LOL I couldn't even read the rest of his/her post without laughing. It was riddled with bias and contradiction. Hehe If you can't be objective, then just don't post in the article of the platform that you don't like. Saves everyone the trouble.

Unfortunately I think the hype is dying down. I bought a PS4 during a flash sale and am trying to sell it at a profit (but still well under retail) but am not having much luck. Not sure what's going on...

I don't understand why you're selling it right before the great games start releasing. Have you seen PS4's 2015 lineup of exclusives and multiplats?

What's your price?

Well it retails for AU$549 and I'm selling it unused for $480 negotiable (I'll go to $450). I have seen the exclusives and apart from Uncharted I'm really not interested. I'm getting the multiplats on PC where they're cheaper and run at higher FPS.

The reason I'm selling now is because I thought the hype train would be chugging along stronger than ever BECAUSE of the line up and that I'd get my full asking price. It's a sleek piece of hardware with a great line up but as a PC gamer it's kind of useless apart from ND games.

Maybe I'll get some bites after Destiny launches. I'm not interested but I'm more than willing to profit from the hype :)

The PS4 is readily available right now. Good luck finding a buyer unless you sell it at a loss!

I've mentioned this in another thread awhile back, so forgive me if anyone's heard me babble this before, but I do think that there's a bit too much of a negative stigma surrounding the word 'hype' nowadays, especially when it comes to the PS4. Too many people use it as an insult, (PS4 doesn't DESERVE those sales, it's all hype!) or even interpret others who say it as an insult, even if the person saying it didn't mean to be insulting, or even to level criticism. I honestly think that a console CAN sell on hype, but STILL deserve those sales, depending on where much of the hype is coming from.

Even the Xbox One is, and will be, partially benefited on hype (granted, a LOT less by the look of things,) as there are fans who are getting on board and proudly proclaiming how darned awesome Halo 5 is going to be, despite barely anything of the game being shown. They hype it simply because it's Halo, and as Halo fans are convinced they will be happy as clams once they have it; they don't really NEED proof that it's 'good enough' for them. There are Nintendo fans who got on board with the Wii U BEFORE it really had much of anything, in part because they had faith that, if nothing else, they would eventually get a new SSB, a new Mario Kart, a new Zelda game, etc, etc. No real, concrete, 'in your face' proof, but instead there's a certain level of faith, a willingness to invest now and believe that awesome things will come.

And if we're talking about a console to invest faith in, or to hype then why NOT the PS4? The PS3 was absolutely fantastic in the later half of its lifespan, blasting out exclusive after exclusive, trying new IPs, investing in games of all sizes and flavors. Gamescom showed that this momentum is still going to go strong with the PS4. If we're to use the past as an indicator, then the last few years suggest that the Playstation platform brings fifty flavors of awesome, even when they're facing an uphill battle. xP And when you factor in the fact that it's had either equal or superior multiplats to its direct competitor, the formerly cheaper price point, Microsoft spinning in circles and making helicopter noises with its mouth, a far stronger presence in Europe, etc, etc, ETC... then yeah, not really a surprise that it's selling so dominantly. o.o

Is the PS4 hyped? Yes, I believe so, but I think that it's well deserved hype, as it's not simply what the console already has that is driving such sales, but also a faith that what is yet to come, or even yet to be announced, will be awesome. I'd likely be one of those adopters, if I had monies. x.x

PS4 is only selling so well because the hype. Lets say the truth: A lot of gamers buy a console only by Hype. It has the worst game library of the gen. The 1st party games are lackluster (especially Knack) and the majority of the 3rd games are released for the old gen.

Yes, PS4 have a lot of potential to be an excellent console, but now, it's a mediocre console with a lackluster game library.

Prove it, put the lists side by side and show us how PS4 has the worst library.

I disagree.  PS4 has the best library and XB1 has the worst.   Not even considering that all the multiplats they share are usually better on PS4.

AU$450 is still cheaper than most places have them for. I'll be ok. If not I can always find uses for it like those in those japanese GIFs.

not only on hype but also because microsoft and nintendo screwed up.

This^  its a perfect storm for Sony. Everything has gone right. I fell for the hype and bought one in January, so +1 for Sony. I even preordered the white Destiny bundle. However, I bought an Xbox One about 2 weeks ago and have been much happier. I have since cancelled my white ps4 Destiny bundle and switched it to the white Xbox One sunset overdrive bundle. The grass isn't always greener. Anyways, I give Sony their props. They have done a great job and people are eating it up.

Basically this is 5th gen where Nintendo & Sega messed up?

The Wii had something special that made the hype somewhat make sense. The PS2 also had with its DVD player.

What exactly is the special thing about the PS4? Sony's first online fee? I dont think thats a good thing.
Share feature? irrelevant.
Bluray support? The ps3 already had it.
Touchpad? Touch was introduced to gaming by the DS 10 years before.

The coolest thing about the PS4 imo is the ability to listen to the whole game/movie by plugging in headphones into your controller but nobody I know that owns a PS4 even knows this feature can be turned on.

Its just power and the power is still not enough to kick PC butt.

There is HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPE like watchdogs level of hype and there is HYPE. Only one is deserved hype. To the average joe  tho it makes no difference because they have to swim with the stream they cant think for themselves and do what people tell them to do. They are drones of an ant-queen (PR/Media)

I waited 8 months before I bought a PS4 and ONLY because I got it for 265€.  Idiots vandalizing in electronic stores day 1 to get one console  or people buying it for +50% on ebay are just sad.

This sums up pretty much what I wanted to say.

To add, the only reason I go the PS4 like 2 months ago because it was on sale for $400AUD, normally $549AUD.  I do have some games on PS4 but nothing that makes me run to my PS4 as MUST PLAY NOW. The games for PS4 will come in 2015 no doubt about that. If sale did not happen I would have waited till 2015 to get one.

Also Nintendo and Microsoft fucked up their PR so bad for launch all the core gamers jumped on PS4 thinking it be their saviour.

Yeah, nothing wrong with it selling on hype. It just seems people will bash you if you say it is. Almost every successful console originally sells on hype.
