I've mentioned this in another thread awhile back, so forgive me if anyone's heard me babble this before, but I do think that there's a bit too much of a negative stigma surrounding the word 'hype' nowadays, especially when it comes to the PS4. Too many people use it as an insult, (PS4 doesn't DESERVE those sales, it's all hype!) or even interpret others who say it as an insult, even if the person saying it didn't mean to be insulting, or even to level criticism. I honestly think that a console CAN sell on hype, but STILL deserve those sales, depending on where much of the hype is coming from.
Even the Xbox One is, and will be, partially benefited on hype (granted, a LOT less by the look of things,) as there are fans who are getting on board and proudly proclaiming how darned awesome Halo 5 is going to be, despite barely anything of the game being shown. They hype it simply because it's Halo, and as Halo fans are convinced they will be happy as clams once they have it; they don't really NEED proof that it's 'good enough' for them. There are Nintendo fans who got on board with the Wii U BEFORE it really had much of anything, in part because they had faith that, if nothing else, they would eventually get a new SSB, a new Mario Kart, a new Zelda game, etc, etc. No real, concrete, 'in your face' proof, but instead there's a certain level of faith, a willingness to invest now and believe that awesome things will come.
And if we're talking about a console to invest faith in, or to hype then why NOT the PS4? The PS3 was absolutely fantastic in the later half of its lifespan, blasting out exclusive after exclusive, trying new IPs, investing in games of all sizes and flavors. Gamescom showed that this momentum is still going to go strong with the PS4. If we're to use the past as an indicator, then the last few years suggest that the Playstation platform brings fifty flavors of awesome, even when they're facing an uphill battle. xP And when you factor in the fact that it's had either equal or superior multiplats to its direct competitor, the formerly cheaper price point, Microsoft spinning in circles and making helicopter noises with its mouth, a far stronger presence in Europe, etc, etc, ETC... then yeah, not really a surprise that it's selling so dominantly. o.o
Is the PS4 hyped? Yes, I believe so, but I think that it's well deserved hype, as it's not simply what the console already has that is driving such sales, but also a faith that what is yet to come, or even yet to be announced, will be awesome. I'd likely be one of those adopters, if I had monies. x.x
