And commenters, have commented without actually checking the facts, a lot.

Check the facts - they aren't lying, and they arent spinning anything.

Its a spin, actually, because its actually statistically biased. They are including a launch year which is, irrelevant of the brand, always carrying a front load of sales (WiiU, PS4, X1, whatever brand you want, always have the same spikes initially). They are ultimately comparing front loaded sales with post-year+ console sales. There are no facts to check in this, unless you just want to varify launch sales spikes, and to say they aren't biasing this data post-preori would be poor statistics... which is what is going on here.

There is other biasing going here since, nowadays, "home console" may as well include handhelds because for many people a handheld is their home console as well as their not-home console, and the conference as a whole was not only PS3/PS4 but also PSVita. If we include full statistics and get rid of meaningless misnomers like "home console" then Sony doesn't have much of anything to brag about... and so the data gets spun to make a narrative.

It was clearly marked on the buttom that it was for 2014, it's just dualshockers being a terrible site that makes stories for clicks on n4g

Okay then? It's not like you can go to Sony headquarters and change the way a company functions but your opinion is fine.

Proud gamer of Nintendo and Sony consoles since 2003.

If it were 2015, and they were using 2014 numbers I would agree that it's spin, but given that the console has only been out in Japan since february, I don't see it as such.

Why would they include time periods for market share that don't include the console theyre focusing on?

I read the op. I didn't expect they're to be errors. My bad. Doesn't change what I said is the truth for Sony and many other companies

The PS3 has been getting supported even during the WiiU's release in 2012 and they were and still are competing with one another. Sony drew an arbitrary line to define their "home console" market with the PS4 included but only since the PS4 launched, giving them the numbers they have. They did this on purpose to give them this narrative for pleasantly looking figures and, as I said, "home console" is a misnomer that means next to nothing in reality and is equally chosen such that the numbers be favorable.

Its true that a line has to be drawn somewhere but, as is the nature of statistics, Sony has chosen a post-preori point in which to draw that line in a way that suits their narrative. This is spin, no way around it. They wanted to include the PS4 so that, obviously, limits where the line can be drawn but that doesn't change the fact that the data is biased. They could just as easily compared "launch years" but that wouldn't work for what they are/were trying to do.

Nintendo could come out tomorrow and talk about the Japanese gaming market since the launch of the WiiU, and paint an entirely different narrative. Or they could take this same narrative and include all gaming consoles machines and change the narrative. Microsoft could come out right after the X1 launches and claim to be outselling the PS4 10:1 if the sales line up...

There's nothing evil about this, mind, but statistics are statistics are statistics.

The release of a console is hardly an 'arbitrary line'.

And they are completely welcome to do so, and their data would be factual so long as they clearly stated the dates involved.

This just made a minus for me from Sony. Not cool. Apparently it's not the first time they twist things for the public, either.

Dissapointing.

You don't really know what time table, and data they are using in their analysis.  Also, while logitudinal data can show trends, its often not an indication of what the market is doing now.
