Well, that's true if you count since PS4 launch in Japan, counting the launch PS4s sold.

Also people always forget that Sony sell PS3 and PS4 when Nintendo only sell decently Wii U (number of Wii sold in japan is so low in 2014...) in Japan and that roughly before Mario Kart 8, PS3 + PS4 > Wii U almost every week in Japan.

Of course it was PR spin, but seriously counting the PS3 as part of the current Japanese console market is a lot more sensible than counting the Wii, the Wii is basically done in Japan.

Just compare each systems 2014 sales in Japan, software and hardware. Also maybe they were talking about 2014, seems a lot more likely than them just adding up PS3+PS4 lifetime sales and putting them against the Wii U only.
