Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumoured specs of the New 3DS (as compared to the regular models)

scource: http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/23907/article/rumor-new-3ds-hardware-specs-details-leaked/ and http://alwaysnintendo.com/rumor-new-nintendo-3ds-specs-leaked-codename-revealed/

So we all know the New 3DS will be more powerful than it's older brothers, so I did some digging. These 2 websites claim to know the specs of the new 3DS through dev kits.

Rumours are: triple the clock speed, double the FCRAM, same GPU and same VRAM (although many other scources also claim an extra 4 MB of VRAM)

Compared to the older models this would mean:

CPU would go from a dual ARM11 MPCore clocked at 268 Mhz and a single core ARM9 clocked at 134 Mhz ---> dual core processor clocked at 804 Mhz and a single core processor at 402 Mhz (L2 cache would be added as well)

GPU would stay the Pica200 at 268 Mhz (no real surprise, the Pica200 is plenty of powerful enough for the 3DS)

RAM: 128MB of FCRAM (fast cycle random acces memory) and 6MB of VRAM (video random acces memory) ---> 256MB of FCRAM and 6/10MB of VRAM (different rumours point to 6 or 10 MB's of VRAM)

Do note that these numbers are all speculation and that they are in no way a definitive measurement of performance.

it is more powerful than the original Wii?

Switch!!!

No, just look at the comparison video for the Xenoblade port. The games looks noticably worse on the new 3DS then on the Wii.

That's only in the graphics department, when it comes memory and cpu this new 3DS beats the Wii i think. To bad they didn't give the gpu a bump.

The 3ds has better visuals than Wii  tho  thanks to shaders.  Xenoblade could look much better on 3ds if some stuff would be replaced with newer shaders etc. But I guess just porting Wii games to 3DS without making use of the 3DSs hardware  gives the result we saw. (I am not saying that 3DS can do better in every aspect but we could in theory have less polygons on 3DS and hide that with better shaders etc. Like RE Revelations also uses relatively low poly characters but they still look phenomenal.)

The framrate was worse, the aliasing worse, the draw distance was worst, same for the textures. I'm still inclined to think the only thing the new 3DS has over teh wii is shaders.

Doesn't the 3DS have to render the same image twice to create the 3D effect? Wouldn't that take a significant chunk of resources?

3DS already has a better GPU than the Wii, its the CPU where it falls behind. The existing model anyway.

I like it. I don't consider this a next gen console from Nintendo at all.

In GPU maybe but overall it's still way behind the Wii. Smash Bros for 3DS looks a lot worse at a lower resolution than Brawl on the Wii. I don't think that bump would help.
